Top 5 Self-Promotion Articles

Self-promotion is something a freelancer needs, to get a gig, land a client and to be successful. Sometimes this requires a whole lot of promotion, but is there an easy way and a hard way? In my experience, the hard way is to let the time take it’s course. Something important a freelancer needs to consider for promoting himself is to always be careful on how you promote. You should never join a forum, community or any other site like that for just posting a link to your work –  you might get considered as a spammer. Which will lose you clients and destroy the reputation you’ve already worked so hard to build up. These articles I’ve collected throughout some time, might be able to help you get started or to evolve your self-promotion.

Selfless Self-Promotion: How to Promote Yourself Without Talking About Yourself A really great article from Vector Tuts+ on how you’re able to promote yourself in an easy and quite simple way. The hardest part is to get started.

6 Simple Ways to Promote Your Online Business Offline Ever wondered how you could promote your business in an offline setting? This article from FreelanceFolder holds a few really nice ideas on what you could do.

PechaKucha: Your Unofficial Exhibit Not really an article on self-promotion per se, but it contains valuable information on what you might gain from a seminar. One thing I really liked with this article, is that it’s not only web design or development – it’s everything.

Meet Radim Malinic: The Graphic Artist Behind Webdesigner Depot Some of us know about this great site called Web Designer Depot and it’s really creative design. But what you might not know, is the man behind the design and the progress he’s made from being the designer of Webdesigner Depot to a book author. Not very self-promotion aimed, but its a great place to get information on how you could promote yourself. I strongly recommend you to read this interview, I gained a lot of useful information from it.

Insights Into the Running of a Design Business A really interesting and useful article for anyone who’s looking for self-promotion ideas. Contains some really interesting information I really recommend you take part of; you will gain inspiration and knowledge you wish you had before.

I´m Patrik, freelance designer, blogger and expert reviewer. I´ve been lucky enough to work for Envato for over a year now, and still counting. My core aim when writing a post is to make it as user friendly as possible, keeping it simple and easy to understand. I think people like me because I´m always friendly and quick when responding to emails and comments alike, details are something I highly value.

Great list. 5 articles I really need now, when I am starting out. I believe I will upgrade my strategy of promotion reading those articles. Thanks!

  2. PG Crystal

Great collection — just what I was looking for today, so great timing! :)

  3. PG Steve Bjorck

This isn’t a dig at Patrik, just an observation about FreelanceSwitch over the past year or so.

It seems that the daily posts on this site (the reason that I originally bookmarked it) are becoming less about the writers own personal experiences and their useful insights and more just a collection of links to articles on other blogs.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to know about these articles and I appreciate them being shared, but it seems a bit cheap to pay writers to write an article and they just post a collection of links to other people’s work.

Would it be better if they plagurised them instead?…definitely not but I’m beginning to wonder why I don’t just visit these other sites instead if they’ve got the content.

Anyway, thanks for the links Patrik, they’re very useful.

  4. PG dejunky

This is great! just what I needed to get my new profile up and running.

As we speak I am building a new site for my portfolio, so this has come just in time for me.

    Nice!

  5. PG Issa

Awesome collection, thanks! I believe any newbie out there should check these posts – will definitely help them stay ahead of the game. Most of my clients find me through my blog or viral stuff on the web. Although I’m not promoting myself there, when they saw what I can do, they want me to do the same thing for them. I guess action speaks louder than words? Cheers!

  6. PG Jordan Walker

Those are a great set of links to build a marketing strategy.

  7. PG Worgen

These articles are either too naive, either very specific for country/region. Nothing of what’s proposed actually worth even trying (from my experience I’ve just wasted the time on these things with no result).

  8. PG Adam

Good post and list of articles.

  9. PG Laura Spencer

Thanks for including my post on your list of self-promotion articles.

We freelancers tend to be so plugged in that we forget about face-to-face networking, which is why I wrote my post to emphasize some of those opportunities.

I’m off to read some of the other posts on self-promotion. Thanks for compiling this list.
