I have been using evernote nearly a year now, and I recommend it to everyone. I find it really useful specially when I am out travelling I can just take notes on my phone. I have it on my desktop, phone and tablet and it has never failed me.
Nice list. I use National Velocity (Mac osx) synchronizing with Dropbox.
What about Simplenote? Usually shows up on lists like these.
Simplenote on my iPhone, full screen Notational Velocity on my Mac. And of course, Dropbox to save and sync files to the cloud. This one’s a great list though. I haven’t heard about half of these before.
Could also try something like Podio if you want to fold in a bunch of other tools too.
I also absolutely love NotableApp for notes + revisions
@Micah I 2nd that! I use Simplenote most of all for my notes!
Thanks for hint, Micah! Simplenote looks like a good addition to the list.
No simplenote? Com’on, simplenote is the best!
My top 3:
1. Simplenote
2. Evernote
3. One note
I’m using SideWriter on my Mac. Great for jotting down stuff.
I’ve been using the free version of Evernote for almost a year and I can’t speak highly enough of it.
Xournal looks interesting- might have to check that out.
Great list! I’m a mac user and I recommend this list of note making apps to all mac users – http://liveoncampus.com/wire/show/3056969
Have been using Notesholder for a few years now. Basic. Free. Pops down/up from the edge of the screen on mouse hover. Unspectacular but useful for note-taking, code clips and all your intermediary text holding requirements.

A.nnotate seems pretty cool. I like that you can collaborate by sharing with colleagues.
Best ever note taking system WAS GemX DoOrganizer. Believe me I tried hundreds of programs, and make hundreds of notes every single day for professional and personal reasons.
Unfortunately the developers tranformed it into a monster, that it was never suppose to be, and the latest version simply isn’t stable to work effectively with. If someone ever replicated this program as multi-platform for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, etc – they would be rich.
The developers should have kept it a lot simpler, and ensure everything worked properly, before adding functionality that never worked properly and no one ever needed. To the best of my knowledge they stopped developing it now…SHAME!
All fine and dandy…but what about less focus on Windoze based apps and include some Mac based apps? A little balance would nice…..
Thanks Jim for your tip! I’ll try to include more Mac apps next time
If you’re looking for a desktop solution, I am a very satisfied user of Zim-Wiki, http://zim-wiki.org/.
