Krop Portfolio & Resume Builder: Review

I’m a freelancer, and I’m a lazy beast.

I put things off all the time. I’ve been putting off writing this article for two weeks already. I’ve discovered though, that when it comes to important things, sometimes I just have to buckle down and get it done, like my portfolio.

How about you? Have you been putting off getting your portfolio designed? Whether it’s lack of time, initiative, or skill, a good looking portfolio is a big undertaking. Maybe next month we’ll get it done.

Last month the folks over at Krop launched their Portfolio & Resume Builder application. Their goal is to get your work out there as easily as possible, and display it as attractively as possible. And I must say…it’s a nice little package.

How’s it work?

The idea behind Krop’s Portfolio & Resume Builder is simple – take the user through a few question and answer steps, have them upload some of their work, pick a look, and you’re done. It took me only a few minutes to finish. Perhaps you won’t have to wait till next month to get your portfolio done?

The setup is quick. You start by picking your primary and secondary specialties. There’s everything from Copywriting to Stylist & Make-up. Missing, however, is Web Designer. What’s the deal? Perhaps they thought Web Development was the same thing, but any web designer will tell you that it’s most certainly not.

From there you fill in your availability. Are you looking for full-time? Freelance? Want to hit the road and relocate? Put a check mark in and you’re moving on.

Next you have a choice to include your resume, build one with Krop, or not display it. If you’re looking to land a job with an agency then a resume would be a good idea to include. If you’re just looking for freelance work, you can probably skip this step.

After that, you’ll be breaking down your experience level. Education, specialties, awards, bio and all those goodies would go here.

And you’re almost done. Next upload some examples of your work, choose three pieces that you want to feature, and then choose a look. Currently there are three different looks to go with – light, dark, and minimal. For my test run I went with dark, because it went better with the feature pieces I uploaded.

What’s to come?

Things are still in the introductory phase for Krop’s Portfolio Builder, so I imagine there’s plenty in the works for down the road. For example they just added the ability to include movies in your portfolio. It would also be nice to see some crossover with their Job Search so that you could link or somehow work in your portfolio when applying for a job on the job board.

The single most requested feature that’s not in yet, is the ability to search the creative database. I’ve been told that that feature will be going in shortly, so expect it to really take off when it does.

Do I need it?

Having your own custom designed portfolio and domain is always going to be number one. If you have that, you probably don’t need this service. However, having said that, even if you already have your portfolio built, it can’t hurt have your name in a database that is regularly searched by companies like Apple, Gucci, and MTV.

Now if you don’t have your portfolio yet? That’s a different story. It’s time to get it done. Head over to Krop and take a few minutes to fill it out. With it you’ll have something to show a prospective client that’s presented in a very attractive layout. Additionally, it’ll take you almost no time to do it!

As an avid Behance user, I usually put most of my social creative energy into being an active user on Behance. I’ve heard many mixed things about Behance in comparison to Krop, but generally speaking they’re both spoken of as the best resources to score some great creative jobs online. Ah, and Behance is beautiful for having a second portfolio. In fact, my Behance portfolio is just as high ranking in google as my own portfolio because of the Dofollow linkbacks.

It would be neat to try Krop out, I like the idea that it’s based entirely around hiring/ viewing artists portfolios. Thanks for the post.

Nice… I’ll have to check this out.

I’ve had mine up (http://www.krop.com/michaelredding/) since mid-march and so far it hasn’t brought in any job inquires like coroflot, behance, or even creative hotlist does. Granted coroflot and creative hotlist have been around for quite sometime and most hiring professional know to look there.

For the $9.99/mo Pro cost and the fact their job board is one of the leaders of media design posting, I was expecting at least a few inquires since posting.

All that said, I think Krops application itself is top notch, easy to use and does a great job of building an excellence presentation presence if you don’t already have one. Also I think every creative should have a visual presence in as many place as possible.

This is a great new feature since Krop is one of the most trafficked job boards for creatives. I snatched my last full time job through them. I already have a portfolio site but it never hurts to build a secondary portfolio here. The more eyeballs that my work receives, the better. I also recommend Behance Network for professionals. Cheers!

This is a nice resume builder. I’ll make sure to present this to prospective clients. Thanks for the info, Travis!

Krop’s portfolio is pretty good, especially for those who are primarily designers and do not have time or do not know how to code. Another good portfolio builder is http://cargocollective.com/

Very nice, takes only a few minutes and looks very professional.

Thanks for all the sites Mentioned. I would definitely create my portfolios on these sites even though i’ve got mine already. I guess no exposure is too much. Meanwhile does anyone know if any of these portfolio sites carry any price charges?

  10. Very cool indeed. I always find it a nightmare when it comes to doing things for myself. There’s incentive when it’s clients work (money) but when it’s something like my portfolio, the procrastination is difficult to fight… I think I might give this a shot!

I was also quite stoked to have http://www.krop.com/themedium/ as an additional web presence for my best work in an abbreviated format. Some prospective clients don’t want to necessarily wade through a whole portfolio of more than 10 or so examples if they’re checking out many candidates. Krop hits the sweet spot!

It is a very pretty site (and very solid review Travis), but it is yet another static portfolio. Not sure how that can compare with the 90,000+ views i’ve got through my Behance portfolio (and solid leads). But, i think creatives should be posted in as many places as they possible can – as long as they don’t have to PAY for the extra portfolio (Krop charges).

Great! I have been working on my new portfolio site for a couple weeks now, constantly revising everything because it has to be perfect…Setting this up as a temporary presence is a great solution until I finish my own site. http://www.krop.com/artemlapitski

I posted mine tonight. I figured why go to the trouble of creating one when this is free and serves the purpose. Here’s mine: http://krop.com/westmainstudio

Thanks for the article! I was feeling guilty for not having a website, but since I’m not really a web person, that was a little daunting. This was way easier! http://www.krop.com/huttongreen/

  16. PG Hamish

This is exactly what I needed.
mine is domain mapped here: http://h-a.me/

I emailed them and found out soon you will be able to add links to snapshots
captions… this is the only thing missing in my opinion, but it’s coming soon :)

Krop is static and pointless. Behance.net is by far the best site for creative professionals

Behance has millions of people viewing your work from all over the world.

    Krop has maybe 100,000……weak!
