Books for Freelance Translators

There are plenty of books written with freelance writers and freelance designers in mind, but there are certainly other types of freelancers working on building a career. If you’re a translator working on a freelance basis, these books can help you up your game.

How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator

If you’re new to freelance translating, Corrine McKay has created a definitive guidebook walking translators through setting rates, getting certifications and even finding clients. McKay is a certified translator and drew upon her experiences in creating a long-term career. Whether you’re simply bilingual or you’ve educated yourself in a second language, this book can provide an introduction to freelancing in the field.

Practical Guide for Translators

The industry for freelance translators is not static, a fact which Geoffrey Samuelsson-Brown explores. He discusses how new technologies have changed the profession and provides insight in how to use those changes to your advantage. The book also provides an in-depth framework for a beginning freelance translator.

Managing Translation Services

If you’re already working in the translation industry and you’ve found yourself in a position where you need to expand, Geoffrey Samuelsson-Brown’s book can prove invaluable. It shows translators how you can bring in help, outsource certain parts of the translation process and increase the size of your freelance business. This book is not meant for beginners; instead, it’s geared towards freelancers who have been in the game for a while.

Becoming a Translator

Just exploring the option of becoming a freelance translator but already have a second language you’re familiar with? Douglas Robinson provides a breakdown on the training of a professional translator, providing you with what amounts to an in-depth class on the topic. This book can bring you up to speed on the mechanics of translation quickly.

Good collection, too bad just one book from the mentioned was available on Kindle :(

  2. Very useful article for freelance writers. thanks.

  3. PG Steph White

Some great resources there – but I just had to say what a fabulous image!

  4. The longer answer is that it never had a chance in the first place. The Darkstalkers world doesn’t lend itself too well to comic book storytelling, unlike really every other fighting game. While the characters are unique and likeable, they’re so scattered that there’s virtually nothing linking them together. In Street Fighter, characters are linked together so you can easily tell a story.

  5. What kind of connection is there in Darkstalkers? Demitri and Morrigan hate each other, Huitzil works for Pyron and Lilith is a Morrigan spinoff character, but that’s it. Even BB Hood and Talbain have nothing linking them other than he’s a wolf and she hates wolves.

Wow that was odd. I just wrote an extremely long comment on http://freelanceswitch.com/product-reviews/books-for-freelance-translators but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyhow, just wanted to say wonderful blog!
