Freelance Radio Episode 9
John BrougherThe ninth episode of Freelance Radio, the official FreelanceSwitch podcast, is now available! I apologize for the long delay–we actually had an issue with the software we use to record the podcast, but (after some great help by the developer of Ubercaster, Eberhard Rensch) now we’re back in business and ready to roll. This episode, Cyan is finally back! As usual, we discuss a number of freelancing issues, including the psychology of starting out, some practical things to consider when making the transition to full-time freelancing and more!
Subscriptions to the podcast are available via iTunes and an archive of all podcasts will appear in the podcast section. We hope you enjoy it!

The Shownotes:
- Theme of the Episode: This episode’s theme is Valentine’s Day, and we all talk about a few things we love (and don’t love quite so much) about freelancing.
- Fantastic Forum Post and Mailbag: We talk about starting out as a freelancer, including some practical considerations (money cushions, insurance, etc.) as well as the psychology of starting out and getting things done.
- Freelance Radio Recommends…: Each panelist recommends a freelancing tool. John goes with The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke, a book about personal finances and how to work towards financial security, even if you’re swimming in debt and frustration. Dickie suggests the excellent VectorMagic tool and mentions ohmythatsawesome.com, an inspiration blog; Cyan recommends behance.net and coroflot.com for portfolio creation (behance.net also features strong networking tools, while coroflot.com has a job board) and Kristen proposes Sparkletopia, a really inspiring blog for creatives.
- Outro: This week’s song is by Breech and is called Keeper of the Key from her album Tarnish and Undress. The song can be obtained by going to the Breech’s MySpace page.
And that’s the ninth episode! Excellent show. As one who has a full-time job and leaning towards taking the plunge, this was a great great show. Gave lots of insight into the idea and mentality one needs to move into a full-time freelancing position.
Keep up the great work everyone!

Great show, I love the cell phone reception sound, not the rings but the other sound when you bring a cell phone closer to a speaker.

Cyan, Kristen, Dickie, John: Really great, fun show, definitely my favourite Freelance Radio episode so far. You touched (ha!) upon some really relevant topics and offered some great advice, as usual. And I agree with Kristen, loneliness can be a very real problem when you’re freelancing, and can be hard to get over at times.
John: Last time it was “the lure of the mentor”. This time, from the ‘Phrase I Never Thought I’d Hear’ department: “… throw a silver lining on the smackdown.” Hehe, very nice. On a more serious note, you’re doing a really great job hosting the show. Keep up the good work

1 Hour and 26 Minutes! No way!
February 18th, 2008
Episode 9 just popped up on my iPod. I looked and saw that it clocks in at one hour and 26 minutes. I thought for about 1/2 a second then skipped forward. I am about to delete it from iTunes. there is no way anyone should be putting out podcasts that long and there is no way I am going to listen to y’all prattle on for an hour and a half! No thanks!

Hi there,
I just stumbled upon this website - WHAT A GREAT FIND!
After leaving the work force 4 years ago while one of our web projects was growing I figured I could manage freelancing fulltime. We got really lucky and landed a local radio company that broadcasted 3 different stations and so we traded web work for advertising space. This helped expand our web design company. But after several clients that wanted something really hot but had no budget for it I decided to focus on personal projects that was bringing in the majority of the income. Recently, my energy has been spent on finding new clients and really developing our web design company further. I know we have the skills and the talent but it has been a long road to get back the the grass roots of what we love to do best!
This website, podcast in particular has give me a much needed boost, and confidence! I thank you for this website and shall return!

I’d still recommend for the “creation” side of vector graphics, if they’re from scratch, Illustrator and InDesign are still irreplaceable.

I just love you guys!
Even though I’ve freelanced since I was in college, I finally gathered the courage to be on my own 5 months ago. However I constantly get these crazy looks as if not having a “job” was a sin. Thanks to you I feel as though I’m not alone in the world. I really really enjoy listening to the tips that you can’t really get anywhere else about marketing, legal matters and finance.
For all of you who don’t know whether to take the plunge or not… Just take the plunge, there will never be a “perfect” time, once you’re out there the fear of having to back to an office and having to give up this wonderful life will make you work twice as hard! =P
Love you!!!!

The code for the band’s address on myspace is malformated, probably lacks the “http://” before the “www”, so it tries to go to an address inside freelanceswitch.com. The real address is http://www.myspace.com/breech.
Really nice and fun podcasts, anyway”

Vector Magic - bad news, it’s not free anymore. You can buy tokens for $3.50 each. One token= one downloaded image. When signing up you get 2 free tokens. Sign up before March 5th to get 2 additional free tokens (for a total of 4 free tokens). Well, it was too good to be true. I’ve been using this tool for couple of months and was very happy with it. Desktop version is supposed to be available soon, but I think I’ll stick to Illustartor.
Vector Magic got a makeover as well - they have a new look…yikes. You be the judge.
Cheers
