Freelance Radio Episode 4

John Brougher

The fourth episode of Freelance Radio, the official FreelanceSwitch podcast, is now online and ready for you! It’s another long one, but we’re actively taking steps to shorten the content so it’s a bit more manageable for all the listeners. This episode, we talk about applying for jobs and gigs online, “trending” and scent branding. We’re sans Dickie, but we still have all the vivacious freelance content you’ve come to know and love!

Subscriptions to the podcast are available via iTunes and an archive of all podcasts will appear in the podcast section. We hope you enjoy it!

The Shownotes:

  • Money Matters/Legalese:We talk about some things to keep in mind with lawyers. After all, suing isn’t always an option.
  • Word of Mouth: We talk about applying for jobs/gigs online, and some things to remember when doing so.
  • Fantastic Forum Post and Mailbag: The panel reads through a great forum post about whether or not to go along with a client’s bad instincts/taste and reads some listener mail.
  • Giveaway: We announce the winner of last week’s giveaway (50 credits from FlashDen.net ).
  • Freelance Radio Recommends…: Each panelist recommends a freelancing tool. John goes with Handbrake, a DVD-ripping utility. Cyan notes how interesting scent branding is (see an article on it at fastcompany.com), and Kristen goes with the book The Well-Fed Writer: Back for Seconds.
  • Outro: This week’s song is by Robert Valente and is called The World’s Just a Circle. The song can be found on iTunes, CD Baby and RobertValente.com.

And that’s the fourth episode! Great job! I love listening to your podcast! Did you guys just skip the ‘Good Client/Bad Client story’ item or will it never return again?

  2. The thing is though when your client does a layout in Word using her favorite fonts (times new roman, impact and brush script at 48pt) AND favorite power words AND favorite colours (aqua-marine, pink and violet) and then asks you to place it diagonally as a tiled background. You have to tell them it sucks in the nicest possible way. If you don’t tell them, other people will, and that reflects badly on you.

  3. I think shortening the episode length would be great - honestly, once a podcast is longer than 30 minutes, I probably will never get around to listening to it - even just breaking it into chunks would help.

  4. Another great episode! In my opinion you shouldn’t shorten it. I think it’s refreshing to listen to a podcast which hasn’t been over edited. If you really feel you have to shorten it how about breaking the episode into parts? But hey, whatever happens I shall still be listening. Keep up the good work!

  5. I know you’ll get tonnes of “opinions” on this… I think 45 min. - 1 hour is a good length for the. I like the longer length ‘cuz I listen while I work. It’s nice to have something a little longer to pass the time. Of course, if it gets past 1 hour it may be a bit too much :) not that I could get too much of the podcast though!

  6. lo·qua·cious /loʊˈkweɪʃəs/ Pronunciation [loh-kwey-shuhs]
    –adjective
    1. talking or tending to talk much or freely; talkative; chattering; babbling; garrulous: a loquacious dinner guest.
    2. characterized by excessive talk; wordy: easily the most loquacious play of the season.

  7. I love the podcasts guys but noticed one thing…why such big files? There has got to be a way to compress your audio files a little bit more. I listen to podcasts all day, ones even the same length, and they are a third of the size. They are just taking too long to download here at work. Let me know. Thanks and love the show regardless.

  8. I’m so glad you are all loving the podcasts:) We’ll have some good-bad client stories in upcoming episodes!

Keep all the fun comments coming!

    :)

  9. Thank you so much for the awesome plug. I’m so glad you’re finding my cover letter clinic useful. Incidentally, it’s ongoing. It just took a hiatus while I attended Blog World Expo - but it returns this week so if anyone wants to send a cover letter in for the clinic feel free to send it to deborahng@gmail.com. The whole FWG community is involved in these clinics and it’s kind of fun and very informative and helpful to us all.

Thanks again for the shout out. I recommend Freelance Switch all the time. (Though I’m not too happy about the paying for jobs thing….)

  10. I like the podcast, it’s nice to listen to as long as you stick to the subject, otherwise it’s just talking about weird smells and poop, which obviously sucks.

  11. I really enjoy the discussions that take place on each of the topics - so if the length of the podcast needs to go longer to accommodate an insightful conversation, then I’m happy to listen longer!

The hiring horror stories hit home with me. I think for many of us, while we are freelancers who often are the ones applying, we also outsource enough to have horror stories of our own. I tried to cover a handful of don’ts in my post on how to not get a job. It was nice to hear that we’ve shared a few common experiences (or nightmares).

  12. I subscribed to your podcast via iTunes, but it looks like there are problems because I can’t see the new episode in my iTunes list. When I try to search for new freelanceswitch episodes, it gives me an error message. Am I the only one having this problem?

  13. Two comments with this episode:
    1) The podcast is way too long. Keep it to 45 mins or less.
    2) I find it amazing that ‘getting paid’ is still an issue that gets discussed. Listening to it is so frustrating, I wish I was one of the panelists just to talk about it.

  14. I’m disappointed that you’re aiming for a shorter format. The advice, the interaction, hell, just the general entertainment value - you nailed it in the first podcast. I want to hear more of you guys, not less.

Listen to Kristen - pause buttons were invented for a reason.

  15. So, every fresh podcast episode is relized by you one time in two week on Thursday ? Am i right ?

  16. Are you guys crazy - make it shorter?!

No way i absolutely love listening to the conversations and insights and personally don’t care what length it is, i’m too busy enjoying it! I listen during work or before i go to bed, it relaxes, entertains and informs all in one go!

  17. I agree with Grace Smith. Dont even think to make it shorter. It’s great now.

  18. Hi,

I also have to agree with Grace Smith…i love the podcasts!!! ;)

  19. I agree with Grace. Let the podcasts stay long. You guys are sharing great stories and advice and I love listening to it.

  20. So.. I’d vote on the “It’s too short” option in the going poll. Keep it up, I find the postcasts a lot of fun and very interesting to listen to!

  21. Ya -
I like the ever-so-long and wonderful podcasts!
    Keep up the great work.

    Mic.

  22. I am very much enjoying the podcasts, however I would like to wade into the too long / too short arguments and proffer the opinion that they are getting too long. One hour in length would be fine and dandy.

Otherwise, carry on what you are doing. I like the personality, the structure and the relevance of the show. Hurrah.

  23. Hello there!

The podcast is awesome - makes you wanna go freelancing big time:) which is what I hope to get to in some time.

About the TPS - yes it does exist and where I work (which is a major white goods corp) it stands for Team Planning Session. Basically it’s a brainwashing tool that’s supposed to make you “share the vision” and “integrate with team mates” and be happy and motivated (doesn’t it sound like some psychoactive substance?).

    How about that?

  24. AN HOUR AND 40 MINUTES??? That is not a podcast! You are all great but I am going to have to unsubscribe if the next one is as long/as big a file/takes as long to get to something valuable. You are taking advantage of the medium, not using it to its full potential as you may think. If you were a radio show you would be on after 2 AM.

I think you have much to contribute but I think your format is going to make people think otherwise. Why not cut the next one into two episodes? Makes them shorter and gives you more content to push out on a regular basis. You could even send people to the website (where they could look at your many projects, etc.) for part 2 if they wanted it right away.

I don’t know. It’s late, and I have made this post like the show: too long, rambling and straying off the target.

Please - you are talented, shorten the show.

    Thanks.
