Hey Dickie! Thanks for mentioning my blog in the podcast!
Anytime!
hi dickie, the webinmail link does not link correctly. cool.
@Justin I’ve fixed the Webinmail link, just a typo on my part, whoopsie!
Great episode!! I love the tips given by all the experts. Keep up the great and informative work. I’m going to tune in more often.
Also, thank you, Kristen, for mentioning WOW! Women On Writing. You’ve certainly got my attention. I look forward to working with you hopefully in the near future. Big hugs to you. =o)
This could not have come at a better time for me. I am in the middle of designing a logo and needed to figure out how to make a specific curve. I realy need to master the Bezier (insert that other French guy’s name) curve. Thanks Von!
The whole show was full of great tips.
There were some more sites mentioned that you haven’t linked to though. I didn’t write them down as John promised they’d be added in the show notes. Some of them were Net Tutes, PSD Tutes, Theme Forrest… Come on John, where are the rest of the links??
I’m a big fan of the podcast but don’t participate in the forums much I must make more of an effort in future.. I’ve been a listener since episode 3. Really miss the Aussie input though, come back Cyan!
@Vincent
Sorry about that–all the tutorial sites and marketplace sites are linked through Envato.com. Go ahead and check them out, they’re fantastic!
I’m not sure who will read this, but can I just talk for a second about a web design degree/certificate as opposed to graphic design?
You guys seemed to poo-poo a web design program, saying they need to focus on graphic design as well. I could not disagree more. I’ve been trained traditionally in both web and graphic design, and the difference between those 2 gets bigger all the time. These days graphic designers tend not to design websites and vice-versa.
Graphic designers need to know CMYK, pantone colors, spot colors, paper weights, die cuts, point sizes.
Website designers need to know RBG, pixels or ems, resolutions, browsers, interface design.
“Making things pretty” is the only similarity between the 2 really, and making it pretty can easily be handled in a web design course.
And why is Dickie on the podcast again?
Thanks John. I hadn’t visted that site yet so didn’t realise.
Tim, what do you mean “again”? Dickie is on every week. I enjoy Dickie’s input and think he has valuable contibutions. Remember these are just opinions and opinions vary. I agree with what you are saying about the difference between Graphic Art and Web Design to a point. As a web designer I think we still need to have an ‘eye’ for what looks good and what doesn’t. A good web dev course should include some degree of that.
Vincent.
Vincent-
I completely agree, and even stated that in my post. Both graphic designers and web designers need to know about typography (less for web designers because our choice of fonts is so slim), layout, and just making something look nice. But the similarities end there. And for that matter, a well-designed brochure could make a dumpy, hard to use website. Even the best website will make a terrible poster because of the poor resolution. They’re different animals, and these days its silly to focus on both if you only want to do one.
I disagree about your opinion on Dickie, but I’ll leave it at that.
Hi guys,
loved this podcast as I do all the others. Thanks for taking the the time to share and inspire.
I came here in search of Kristen’s recommendation Wow! Women on Writing URL. Found it but there is typo in the URL… Just a heads up!
K
Thanks for a great episode. I’ve been looking at podcasts for a few years (different industry) and have never found one that I could follow. I just finished listening to this episode as well as #25 and am definitely going to be sticking around for more. I found it informative and interesting to listen to.
The post by John Brougher is great one. The information given in the post is Freelance Radio episode 27. The related links gives more and more information about it. Thanks for this post.
