Freelance Radio Episode 2

John Brougher

The second FreelanceSwitch podcast is now online and ready for your listening. This week we cover lots of issues, but the highlight has to be Dickie’s amazing strategy for pitching to new clients. All the panelists were very impressed by this one. So if you’re looking to expand your client base then don’t miss this episode!

iTunes subscriptions to the podcast are available here and an archive of all podcasts will appear in the podcast section. We hope you enjoy it!

The Shownotes:

  • Money Matters/Legalese: Kristen goes into more detail about contracts, answering some questions and comments about contracts, and we go off on perhaps the most content-filled tangent ever. Kristen’s contract can be downloaded from our site.
  • Word of Mouth: We talk about how we should refer to ourselves in marketing materials–”we” or “I”…or something else entirely?
  • Fantastic Forum Post and Mailbag: The panel reads through a great forum post and reads some listener mail.
  • Good Client/Bad Client story: Kristen shares a good client story with everyone.
  • Review of the Week: Our review this week is of the Crumble, Crackle, Burn: 120 Stunning Textures for Design and Illustration, by Von R. Glitschka
  • . You can see more and download the free samples here.

  • Giveaway: We announce the winner of last week’s giveaway and stipulate how you can win the giveaway for this episode (to receive a copy of Crumble, Crackle, Burn:120 Stunning Textures for Design and Illustration, signed by Von).
  • Freelance Radio Recommends…: Each panelist recommends a freelancing tool. John goes with Robin Williams’s (no, not that Robin Williams) Design Book for Non-Designers, Cyan suggests Tim Ferris’s The 4-Hour Workweek, Kristen recommends The AP Stylebook and Dickie suggests something a little on the lighter side — The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS.
  • Outro: This week’s song is by Adrien Gardiner and is called Words Unsung. The song can be purchased as a loop on Flashden.

And that’s the second episode (marathon length!)! If you like it, please feel free to rate it in iTunes or your favorite podcast aggregator, and don’t forget to email your questions/comments via the Freelance Radio form. If you’d like to record a question/comment or submit an original outro song, you can upload them via this form!

  1. So… is there a way to listen to this for us that think itunes is the root of all evil? :)

  2. Sorry @Crizo and others for the technical hiccups–long story short, problems have been resolved and the audio is now playable online and the feed is also provided for those of you using alternatives to iTunes that would still like to subscribe.

Still working on the long loading/downloading times–hopefully, just a minor server gasp.

  3. Where can i find Kristin’s Contract?

  4. Podcast ends rather abruptly at about 1:12 both here and on iTunes… am I missing something?

  5. @Tim

The link is now on the episode 2 show notes, as well as the episode 1 show notes.

    @Kristina

We’ve been having some server slowdown, so I apologize in advance to those of you seeing slow download speeds. As to ending abruptly at 1:12, I’d suggest subscribing on iTunes, as the server slowdown is affecting the buffering of the Flash Player. Does that help at all?

  6. Thanks John, for the help. and i must say i’m really enjoying your podcast. If i can ask, when can we look for new podcast? do you do them a certain time of week or month?

  7. sorry, i forgot to ask. Do you happen to have a sample contract for Freelance designers?:)

  8. Check out the show notes from Episode 1 to see my contract:)

Thanks for being so patient while we resolve these tech issues. I assure you John is workin’ hard to get it all set!

  9. @Tim, just FYI, we do our shows biweekly (once every two weeks), so you can expect to see them every other Wednesday, barring technical hiccups of course. :)

  10. Another great episode! I really enjoy these, thanks a lot!! But there’s a problem with the current show; it ends at 1:34:25 but it keeps going for a minute. Even when I check the file info in iTunes it’s set at 1:34:25,697. It stops playing when Dickie’s talking about the textures.

  11. Just FYI folks, we’ll have a final version of the audio up soon–I know that there have been some issues with new subscribers getting files that are ending prematurely. I can’t apologize enough, and just want to say that we’re working like crazy to get this resolved, and will ensure that this doesn’t happen again.

  12. Great show again. I loved the idea about “in-kind” compensation for work and how it generates business and personal benefits. I’d love to hear about these types of ideas some more and while cold calling was mentioned briefly in the pod cast, I’d love to hear more about innovative lead generation and how to stick in someones mind. Questions that come to mind that circle the topic include: Do any of you attend professional dinners/conferences where potential clients may be? If you strike up a conversation with someone and feel they may be a potential client, how to you increase your odds of being remembered (especially when they don’t have an immediate need)?

I’ll look forward to catching the rest of the podcast!

  13. Hi, One thing i would love to hear you guys speak on is. how do you set vacation sick days etc.. when you a freelancer. do you let the clients know that would will be away from whatever dates?

  14. I love how you’re giving us suggestions for discussion. These are GREAT topics I am sure we will address!!

Dickie stole the show this week and offered some really great tips. I am still going to try to start up my spa business sector. When I get time…take initiative. But I’m on it. I target a lot of business that way!

  15. Phew!

All those weird technical glitches should be all set now. If you play the podcast from the site now (or re-subscribe via iTunes or your podcast aggregator of choice), your new download of episode 2 should be fantastic! The duration still shows up incorrectly, but it’s a minor thing that we’ll correct for future episodes.

Hope everyone’s doing okay! If there’s any more feedback on the show, please don’t hesitate to contact us or to leave more comments here or in the forums.

  16. Jup, it fixed now; thanks for the hard work John, much appreciated! :-)

  17. Dickie -
Thanks for your tangent riff on client relationships. Veritable gold. I wish I would have heard this 2 years ago. It’s basically my M.O. but you really put it into words well. Thanks.

  18. An direct link to the download would be greatly appreciated, I don’t know if I’m missing something but I can’t see any.

    Great podcast folks!

Regarding Cyan’s comments about not doing work for free (which I agree with 1000%) I think what Dickie is doing is quite different.

He approaches clients who he wants to work for and does a mock up—he is not bidding for an advertised job against hundreds of others. And as he noted during the show, should someone take his work and then try to use it without proper compensation, small claims court it is!

    Can’t wait for Episode #3!

  20. Whhaaaaaattt? Drumsticks are NOWHERE near as good as Cornettos! I’m in the USA, and I might visit my home country, Portugal, next year, and that’s one of the top things I’m excited about: Cornettos!!

Excellent podcast… Took 4 pages worth of notes — thank you.

    *dreams about a Cornetto-gasm*

  21. Hey guys,

I would like to hear more about contracts. LIke exactly should be in your contractto cover your self and the client but mostly your self :)

  22. Sorry for all the typos, I wanted to say, “LIke what exactly should be in your contract, to cover”

  23. Hooray, an awesome podcast guys! As always John your voice is smooth like butter :-)

  24. He does sound smooth like butta, huh, Collis?

I just wrote an article including all the contract information this week on the blog, so if you’ve got more questions, the answers are there:)

  25. thanks Kristen! i noticed. I was like she wrote that for me..lol :) thanks again

  26. This was informative and enjoyable. Looking forward to #3.

  27. Hey guys,

Just want to say Hi fom the Emerald Isle

    great resource, keep it coming.

I’ll be putting my newfound knowledge into practice on my next project.

  28. And Hi from Ukraine. Here we are listening too. :) Thanks for amazing podcast.

  29. Thanks for making this podcast! Thank you guys. In this episode, I studied how to get customers not by offer them my services. But get them by slowly in more “Venus” way. Nice! Rock on guys!

  30. these podcasts are immense, but you really need a european and UK freelancer. That would make it THE single best podcast on the net.

  31. OK. I’m late since I’m on session 2 and you guys are off and running.

A comment on why not to say “your web site sucks.”

I absolutely love the idea of giving them a tease of your work to open them up to greater possibilities. That you invest your effort without immediate expectation of compensation is a powerful opening to a relationship.

For this idea you get one free cappuccino at my cafe, Conscious Cup Coffee whenever you visit Crystal Lake, IL!

  32. whoa Dickie, great great info.
    thanks

  33. I have a question, if you try to develop a personal relationship with cliients, doesnt that affect in future projects? What if they want to lower prices based on the ‘good relation’ and start sayin “hey can you give me a better price? we are friends aint we?

That has given me trouble before.

  34. Howya goin’ is quite said in Australia, I say.
