Riki - if you look back through some of the previous posts about this issue, I've outlined it pretty thoroughly in comments there. Particularly the post about trading hourly for task-based pay.

It's not even an hourly vs. project fee thing--it's that your hourly rate or project fee can vary, too!!

Many times, the client just doesn't understand what goes into a project, and treats hiring a designer/writer just like they do when they buy office supplies: they pay a certain price for an item. But, if you educate them to the fact that every project is different, and you show them that, even with different prices, they have some cost control (by limiting the project, # or hours, etc), they should be much happier.

@ Mave - I didn't quite understand this bit "excellent reasons that hourly rates don’t work out fairly for either party". Why would charging an hourly rate be unfair to the Freelancer?

Also how do you determine what a set amount of work is, if it's not based on results or time?

I have the opposite problem - I prefer fixed rates, and clients will often ask for an hourly rate. In those cases I simply explain all the excellent reasons that hourly rates don't work out fairly for either party, and the benefits of working with flat fees.

This has been discussed here a lot in the past, but people who fear flat fees always have the same arguments, and usually they are rooted in the fatal error of quoting based on a result, instead of quoting based on work done. It's common for people to say, "What if the project takes longer than expected?" "What if the client keeps changing their mind, or is never satisfied?" It's really simple - quote a set fee based on a set amount of work. No-one in their right mind would say, "Yeah, I'll design your website for $X" and leave it at that, not knowing whether it will be a 5 page site or a 500 page site. You'd quote "$X for a x-page site, x versions and x # of rounds of revisions - further versions, pages or rounds to be charged extra." And if the client doesn't know what they want, quote them a rough based on some assumptions and go from there.
