Von’s Keyboard Characters (and Giveaway)
Dickie AdamsTHE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED. THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED!

Ever wish you could draw pretty pictures all day and get paid for it? What if you had the opportunity to one up that lifestyle and even go at it freelance style? Von Glitschka, a freelance illustrator behind some very impressive art projects has recently released his Keyboard Characters into the wild. We sat down over coffee, chatted about Von’s world and now present 10 questions (and of course, answers) with this freelance art maven…

DA: Where is your office located these days?
VG: I work out of my home studio. I enjoy it and my cats like to visit me during the day which is nice.
DA: How did you end up moving into freelance work?
VG: Technically I have never referred to it as freelance. I started my own business, and incorporated back in 2002. I’ve averaged about a 15-20% growth each year but that is now starting to level off since I am my only employee.
Over the past five years I’ve developed a specific niche for myself in that the majority of my work is not for my own clients but rather the clients of other firms or agencies. I am a hired creative gun if you will.
Previous to running my own business I worked for other firms or inhouse art departments over a 15 year period and many of those relationships play a part in what I do now.
DA: Are you always in work mode? If not, what do you use to decompress?
VG: Art is a huge part of my life. I never really turn it off. I am always being inspired with ideas that hit me no matter where I am at or what I am doing. Just the other day I was slicing a cucumber and held it up to the light and marveled at the symmetric pattern on the inside with the seeds. I grabbed my iPhone and took a picture of it and now that moment of inspiration will turn into a titled pattern for my new book I am working on. That kind of thing happens a lot. My friends usually just laugh at me when I get in that mode.

The longer I work in this business the more I feel blessed by what I get to do to make a living. Mainly because I’d do it regardless anyway so the fact I can also call it my job and work on a wide range of fun projects is just too cool. I feel really fortunate in this respect.
Outside art though I enjoy just hanging with friends and talking or playing with my two daughters. They just build a new park by our house so I am starting to shoot hoop again, I find that relaxing as well.

DA: Regarding difficult clients, what is your preferred method of dealing with and possibly avoiding them.
VG: My annoyance threshold for dumb clients is very low. If I detect the client isn’t going to be a good fit I just try to decline the work immediately. If they insist then I quote high and add a heavy ‘pain fee’ to the quote. That usually scares them off. And if it doesn’t I can afford to just farm it out to a friend and just manage it.
DA: If you could give one positive and one negative thought about freelancing, what would they be?
VG: Positive: Flexibility. Some days I’ll work out of a coffee shop sketching out concepts, listening to my favorite podcast or audio book. I set my own schedule and I get to choose who I work for and what I work on. My wife stays home so we get to have lunch together a lot which is something we hardly ever did the first 15 years.
Negative: I miss the inner office interactions that firms give you. Being able to bounce an idea off of someone or just talk. I don’t miss the marketing weasels though.

DA: When creating content, what’s your typical process?
VG: Your readers can view my entire ‘Illustrative Designer Creative Process’ in this pdf.
DA: What made you decide to create Keyboard-Characters?
VG: I wanted a clever and fun illustration focused self-promo piece I could give away to clients, friends and potential business leads. So instead of just doing what most illustrators do and print a post card or mailoff a tear sheet I decided to handle it like my own licensed product.
People have enjoyed them and I’ve mailed off sets to Dubai, Japan, Australia, Mexico, London etc.
DA: Do you have a favorite character in the pack?
VG: It’s a tie between ‘Feed Your Imagination’ and ‘Fish Bowl’. The commentary for each character is on the website and gives you a good insight into my thinking behind each character.

DA: You find yourself stranded in a remote airport. What would be your three must-have tools of the trade?
VG: 1)My iPhone: It’s like the graphic designers “Tri-Corder”. OK, it can’t scan for Dilithium radiation levels in alien DNA, but a Tri-Corder can’t play Blue Oyster Cult! 2) My MacBook: Since my iPhone can work as a rudimentary scanner via the built in camera, I have everything needed to create with. 3) My sketch book.
DA: Who would be considered your hero or mentor?
VG: I am asked this a lot. I didn’t really have one primary mentor in terms of creative influence. It was more of a culture of art over the period of my childhood that really shaped me in that respect. Maybe that is why I dabble in so many different things design and illustration wise?
If I had to pick a top ten list of influences I’d say in no specific order:
- Jim Flora: 1950’s RCA Records Art Director.
- Norman Rockwell: Loved looking at his work as a kid.
- Richard Scarry: The worm dude rules!
- MAD Magazine: My parents loathed this so of course I thought it was awesome!
- Japanese Cartoons: StarBlazers, Marine Boy, Speed Racer
- Bob Ross: I’d stumble upon him on Saturday morning and be captivated by his Demerol voice and blending techniques.
- Star Wars: In sixth grade I could draw Darth Vader in 15 seconds.
- Neville Brody: His work motivated me to make a quantum shift in my whole creative process.
- Sid & Marty Kroft Shows from the 1970’s.
- My Mom: She is a very creative person. She was always drawing or painting and encouraged me even to do the same growing up. When I was in middle school she found some naked lady drawings I had done and she posted them all up in my room just to embarrass me and all she said through the laughter was “Not bad.”

The Monkey Boy is my favourite because it makes me think about the kind of monkey business freelancing really is.

My favorite is the Dragon. I love them. Watching Mulan a thousand times, visiting mediaeval festivals and wearing a Dragoncostume at german carnival (http://www.draumdaenzer.de/). How can i not vote for this nice firebreathing dragon.

Von is one of those guys you hope to be at a bar one day and look over and say, “Hey isn’t that the guy I always hoped I’d meet in this way?”
He’s everywhere, and he’s always well spoken.

My favourite? Defenetly Riled Rover!!
Chasing my troubling thoughts and barking at my cares. That’s just what I need. And besides, I just love the flee that’s hopping down his back. ^^
(Another reason is that he is the lowest and won’t get between me and my iMac ;P )

FISH BOWL:
I miss my pet fish pet at home. Somedays I work like crazy all over the place, so I don’t get to see Jack that often, so when I’m off working at a client, I’d love a nice reminder on my keyboard:) And when I’m at home working like crazy, it’s a nice reminder not to forget to feed him:)
Great designs, idea & execution.

Great interview with someone I wasn’t aware of but am now psyched I am.
“Feed Your Imagination” has got to be my favorite since being a creative director sometimes I can’t find enough food to feed my own.

I like the “Feed The Imagination” character. I like that it represents letting your ideas and thoughts flow. I have so many during the day that I tend to sometimes get overwhelmed and try to oppress them.
This serves as a good reminder to let them flow, record them, and put them to good use in the future through creative channels.
Great interview.

The Desktop Dragon: to help me deal with the strenuous clients of mine and remind me of my hidden powers (if only I would let them out).

The fishbowl is my favorite because the skull and the water make me think of pirates, and I’m really into pirates. If I wasn’t into pirates it would probably be the dragon… ’cause that’s one awesome dragon.

The Riled Rover is my favorite. It says “Go AWAY!” to all the other cube-worlders and makes my oldest kid giggle.

“Feed your imagination” is my fav -
when you get an idea - its voracious and you can’t do anything until you find a piece of paper and work your thoughts out - The grin also makes me think of the glee you are feeling when the light bulb clicks on!! I love it!!

Having been aware of Von’s work for a few years now and having dealt with him personally, I can definitely say not only does he have this business and self-promo thing down, he does it in an ethical, fair and professional way and is always giving back to the community. If there are leaders in this generation of designers, Von is definitely one of them, simply by being Von. We need more like him.

Cubicle Zombie: Mortimer is who I have to go with. I’m making “the switch” in about a month… He’s the avatar of what I’m escaping and why I need to meet every single deadline!
Kudos on the interview! Glad to see support of Von’s ever expanding talent.

I like Fish Bowl and the Mokey Juggling , the monkey cuz i like monkeys and i like juggling, and is sort of a referal to the freelance world, you have to be doing like 10 things at the same time, and it requires hability, vision and comitment to achieve such a work load and pull out your best at every single proyect. And the fish bowl i like the colors and shapes, the referal to the Freelance work it remids me how should you be in the bussines matter, even if you small and a single being, you have to get your teeth sharp and be agresive in the work seeking, nailing proyects matter. a reminder for the bigger agencies,”i might be small, but i do my work and i do it good”, like “be carefull” i’m here don’t stick your hand in my bowl or i’ll bite you.

All the characters are entertaining. I will tell you what I don’t like. When you go to order a pack you get transfered to PayPal in a frame. Not at all best security practice. I trust it was an oversight but it’ll keep me from ordering.

I have trouble picking between Feed Your Imagination, and Pet Monster: Snilbog. I have so many ideas that need fueling and action. And I could feed all the bad ones to my Snilbog! ^^ A agree, it’s time to let them out from under the beds and onto the desks. ^^

I would have to vote for “Feed your imagination”. I love all of the characters especially this one because they are so rich in colour and design and they also serve reminders, i.e., Feed your imagination, which I may not always remember to do.

I Love Fish Bowl for many reasons: I am a Pisces, my first name rhymes with Piranha (not Vanna), and the skull in the tank keeps me in touch with my punk rock past! Hooray for that!

I have a hard time picking between Snilbog and Fish Bowl, but I’m gonna say Snilbog. I like him the best for the same reason that I love Pugs. So slobbery and ugly and lovable, how could you not?

I’m happy to be introduced to this artist and his work. I’d like to buy a bunch of these as posters, but if I had to choose one on my keyboard it would be the dragon. I am a large fantasy fan so naturally I run into dragons a lot. This one though has a great style and is not the stereotypical fire breathing monster that I typically have in my mind. A great new perspective!

I’m partial to Monkey Boy for two reasons: (1) I call my son “monkey” and (2) seeing Monkey Boy reminds me of my son and brings a smile to my face when I’m working at late at night on a tough project!

I have to put in a vote for Feed Your Imagination because I am the office Idea Hamster, and I’m constantly looking for inspiration and ideas to keep my colleagues going. It would be a pleasant reminder to “see beyond what you see” from my desk. Thanks for the opportunity to give my 2 cents!

I’ve always had a MOUSE next to my keyboard. Now having a CAT on the keyboard would really make a great desktop combo!
Ah… now that makes a complete desktop, with some cat vs mouse action!

When I used to work from home I had my cat sleeping on my desk. We sometimes had staring contests. She’d just peek from behind my notebook and sit motionless for minutes on end.
I really miss those long nights staring at each other while I had to complete that darned project.
You might have guessed it, my favorite is Corporate Cat: Felicia. She reminds me of my cat back home. I wouldn’t get into any staring contest with her though - I’d never get anything done.

Wow! Thanks everyone, your comments made my day. For those who have ordered sets they all went out today so you’ll have them soon. A few of you (Romania and Cuba) will get them a bit later due to shipping costs.
If any of you would like to see the process in creating one of the Keyboard Characters (Riled Rover) from sketch all the way to pre-press and final head on over to my ‘Illustration Class’ web site at:

Thanks again everyone.
