Thanks again Kristen! The interview came out very well. You made me sound like I knew what I was talking about. ;)

I would like to also thank Jeff Fisher for promoting the interview on his blog, Identity Crisis.

Thanks guys

I feel very honored to be featured and interviewed by FreelanceSwitch and Kristen. :)

Regarding competitions, I only enter the ones where they ask for projects that have been already completed. If I were to enter any competitions asking for new designs. In that case, the designer would keep all rights to the work. The sponsors of the competition are not allowed to use your ideas or designs without permission.

Like Jeff said, not to sure if it's against the rules to post links on here.

So over at the FreelanceSwitch forum. Jeff Fisher started a thread called "Design competitions and book submission requests." Jeff has posted an excellent list of competitions with deadlines.

I also add to Jeff's thread. A blog post of mine called "Networking On-line For Potential Clients." It list and links to networking, portfolio and design forum sites. I also have another blog post that list some of the competitions I also enter called "Getting the Word Out & Finding Potential Clients."

So head on over to the forum for the links.

Thanks again everyone!

Hmmm...I left a previous comment about the article - and thanking Cal for the mentions and it disappeared. Maybe the "powers that be" didn't like the link in it.

In that case, in response to the questions about finding out where to submit submissions for books and competitions I don't want to "get in trouble" by posting a link. If you do a Google search for "design competition deadlines" you will find references to my blog - bLog-oMotives. About every 30-45 days I post a current list of design competition and book submission deadlines. I've been doing it so long that some publishers now contact me directly to post links to their submission requests.

Nice interview. Way to tell it, Calvin! Tho' I'm not a big fan of competitions, except for ones in which you submit already published (in one fashion or another) work.

I would imagine that one of the great perks of freelancing is making your own hours. I'm another night owl who likes to work late at night when the house is quiet. But it can just as easily turn out that I go thru periods where I go to bed early for a few hours, get up for a coupla hours of work, go back to bed for one or more, and get up for good at around 4:30 AM. Especially if I'm working on more than one project--I design and lay out books. But hours like this also call for naps in the early afternoon.

And always, I remind myself, fully half the work of a freelancer is finding the next gig.
