Anita, I do earn from my websites and blogs. I only started working heavily to monetize them recently, and the highest earner is my business blog which earned a little over $2000 last month. I'll be monetizing several other blogs much more heavily after their next PR updates this month (hopefully), because I find that private ad sales do enormously better than things like Adsense.

James, I actually posted on my business blog a while back about business plans for freelancers and independent consultants. Here's that post. Really though, a business / marketing plan for a freelancer will be very similar to that of a small business. I'd suggest looking for business plan resources and outlines from the SBA and Bplans.com.

Joan, glad to see others appreciating the value of the niche in PR work. :) I'll definitely check out the course (press release writing is a huge focus on my business blog, PR blog, and I recently released an e-book on the subject), and when I have a chance it'll probably make a good review on the PR blog. :)

Three cheers for Jennifer's solid advice on how to niche.

Too many small-business people try to be all things to all people. Too many authors write books they want "the whole world" to read.

I also wanted to let freelance PR people, or anyone who self-promotes, know that I am offering a free email tutorial on how to write press releases. It's a 12-week course, and if you're persistent and stick with it, it will be like you have earned a master's degree in writing and distributing press releases online.

You can opt into the course at http://www.PublicityHound.com/pressreleasetips/art.htm

Interestingly, the course discusses how to turn a one-size-fits all press release into several different releases that speak directly to niche audiences.

great post. Any advice on somewhere to look about bringing a niche business/market plan some solid structure from a freelance approach?

This is kind of points 2 & 3 on your getting started section.

I'm working on the niche I want to pursue. Thanks

Interesting interview. My question is: does she generate revenue via all of these sites she owns, and if so, how?
