Thanks again to Kristen Fischer and FreelanceSwitch for publishing this interview. Now less than a year later, the National Association of Freelance Legal Professionals (www.naflp.org) is growing strong, and the FreelanceLaw searchable database of legal freelancers (www.freelancelaw.com) lists over 200 beta-testers and is a few weeks away from a major upgrade.

Although I've never freelanced as a lawyer, I've done a lot of freelancing for lawyers... For about 2 1/2 years now I've been making PowerPoint presentations for trial attorneys. It seems like with their 80 hour work weeks, most attorneys don't have the time to learn how to use PowerPoint, let alone design aesthetically pleasing and effective slides. I would say there are plenty of opportunities for work like this with small to mid-size firms, and fellow freelancers should certainly keep an eye out!

Thank you to some of commentors for reminding me that 8:00 to 4:30 is not a short day to the majority of the world, though it sounds like slacking to 99% of lawyers. I recently attended an event where a lawyer happily shared with us that she only worked a 60% work schedule with her law firm. When asked exactly how many hours that was, she said she only worked about 50 hours/week!

By the way, the 8:00 to 4:30 includes my regular work for a paycheck, plus my two business startup ventures and work on writing a book. Is that better? :-)

8:00-4:30 is a regular work day. If you are an artist or creative person, maintaining focused creative energy at full intensity of course makes it a long day, but it is a normal day! Most Attorneys work 13 hour days or more! I think it is great that they now have opportunities to give their life balance for mind, body and soul by working in a freelance arena. Melody Kramer, Kudos for being a visionary in your profession!

I think she meant to say that her work hours were from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
