What kind of freelancer are you?

Collis Ta'eed

Hey guys, I’ve been wondering a lot lately about just what kind of freelancers we have reading FSw. I know there are plenty of professions represented, so I thought we’d have a quick poll!

On the right you will see I’ve listed some of the most common types of freelancers and I’ve left it open for you to add other types as well as to be a part of a few different jobs as I know lots of freelancers do a bit of everything.

So whatever kind of freelancer you are, it’s time to REPRESENT your profession!

  1. I’m a freelance pianist. Some of the things I do on this basis are playing concerts, broadcasts, auditions for singers, coaching and playing in opera productions, and adjudicating. I used to freelance also as a teacher and coach, but now I teach at a conservatory, which is much better for employment standards and getting students.

  2. I like to call myself a Freelance Web Designer, however I delve into other creative feilds such as Graphic Design and so forth.

  3. I’m a freelance graphic designer and photographer. Shooting for fashion magazines and mostly working on printable advertisments (magazines, billboards etc..). Sometimes web design, but that’s not my strength..

  4. Web designer here.

  5. When I freelance (not currently freelancing right now), I’m mainly a freelance translator… I’ve also done a little bit of IT consulting/programming and desktop publishing.

    Cheers,

  6. I’m a freelance web developer - php, mysql, javascript, css, xhtml, etc. Not to be confused with a designer.

  7. I usually present myself as a graphic designer & web developer, though I do web / UI design, interactive media and some writing, the first two titles seem to resonate with potential clients and are fairly easy to interpret for those inexperienced with our profession.

  8. I am a freelance editor. I work on contract mostly with fiction writers in the speculative fiction market.

  9. I call myself a web developer & designer as I do both ends of the field, but every once in awhile I do a small graphics job as well. It’s interesting trying to explain exactly what I do to people… most of the time I just end up saying something like “I do web stuff…” haha.

  10. GREAT poll Collis!
I class myself as a web designer / graphic designer. However I do so many little things as a Freelancer.
Advisor, teacher, photographer (I am planning on hiring for this job), programmer, caffeine drinker and a very patient guy are just a few of the other things that I fill my days.

I love coming to your website!
    BTW DUGG!

  11. Wow. Illustrators are only 7% in this poll so far! I didn’t realize how few of us freelance illustrators there are out there — or rather, how many of the other kind!

  12. Graphic designer here; web mostly; plus do some coding; not too much though :/

  13. Freelance web designer and developer.
    Kisses!

  14. I’m a designer, graphic and architectural.

  15. Gravatar

    Andrei Potorac

  16. Web Design, Web development and SEO. Kind of everything. Ive build desktop applications as well. Jack of all web trades.

  17. I’m an illustrator. Thanks for the site..

  18. Web and graphic designer for the arts. Also a feature writer on art and design for INK publications.

  21. I’m a freelance web designer and developer.

  22. I have just started working freelance helping community organizations improve their capacity, especially board development and process. Kind of outside of the scope of most of your readers. Any suggestions on a site for that?

  23. I started off as a Web Designer and now I’m a Programmer, fancy that! (I’m just testing comments, you see) :)

  24. Awesome, lots of variety here! I didn’t know there were so many designers on the site too.

Well anyway i think you guys probably know this already, but I am a designer / writer, Collis is a designer / writer / developer, Jack is a writer. Other contributors are:

Scott is a designer / music producer
    Robert is a writer
    Leo is a writer
    Craig is a developer
    Mondongo is a photographer
    Matthew is a developer

I think I got all that right, well anyhow, just reminds me that we really need to update that team page :-)

@Glen, awesome to have someone like you on the site. No type of freelancing is out of the scope of the site, but some don’t get as much special attention I suppose!

  25. I feel like pure developers are totally under-represented here, so I’ll step up. I don’t really do web design, I do both frontend and backend development, database things, deployment. You name it, I’ll do it ;)

  26. I’m a freelance engineer/designer/writer, doing practical technology R & D for clients alongside basic graphic design and so on. E.g. at present, I’m working on a new type of folding bike for one client, writing a series of articles for another, and developing a new type of papercraft product as my own venture. At the moment all this is full-time, but from this autumn I’ll be starting postgraduate research into a particular aspect of environmentally sensitive design, and the freelance stuff will be ‘on the side’ for a few years.

This is a great website with some fantastic insights, which I only wish I’d appreciated before I started freelancing!
