The Survey Is On Its Way!

But we’re running behind! For those of you who’ve been wondering what’s happening, the survey is on it’s way. So far it’s taken about 60 hours to put together, with another 20 hours to go, so let’s just say it’s been a bit more labour intensive than we expected!

It will definitely be ready in the next month (hopefully two weeks), and as soon as it’s done we’ll be emailing it to everyone who took the survey and supplied their email address.

Just to keep you interested, here are some interesting tidbits we’ve learned so far:

  • 81% of us are male (where are all the freelancing girls?)
  • Most of us are web designers, followed by graphic designers, then programmers
  • UK web designers and American web designers have close to the same hourly rate on average
  • We have a freelance tango dancer, massage therapist and a couple of ministers in the community

When the final results are released, you’ll be able to discover:

  • what the average hourly rate and yearly wage is in your industry, or your industry and country, or your industry and US state
  • You’ll be able to see whether women make less, more or the same amount as their male peers
  • You’ll be able to find out where in the world freelancers are the most satisfied and healthy

And much, much more! So stay tuned, and sorry for the delay!!

Finally, I was really wondering what happened, and wanted to send you an email, until you came with this post… :)

  2. PG Nathan Levesque

Looks like you guys are doing a thorough job, and so far it sounds well worth the wait.

  3. PG Aaron Cruikshank

    Two questions and a proposal:

    1. What was the total number of respondents?
    2. How many questions did you ask?
    3. If the ratio of respondents to questions is greater than 15:1, would you be willing to share the raw data (stripped of any personal information, of course) with a humble research professional who might be able to eke some amazingly sophisticated findings out of the data?

    Love,
    Crooky

  4. PG Cyan

@Nathan – I hope so!! I think the hourly rate information will be very handy for all of us. It’s always good to see where you stack up to the competition!
@Crooky – I’ve sent you an email with all the gory details :)

  5. PG Matthew Pennell

“UK web designers and American web designers have close to the same hourly rate on average”

That’s interesting – dollar to pound, or with the current terrible exchange rate? Looking forward to the published results. :)

  6. PG Carmen Ruiz

I have the same question “Where are the girls?” :D This is definetly a curious result. I knew there were less females freelancing. But this result is far from what I expected!! I just wonder why is that this way!! :O

  7. PG rotationbias

Darn, this must have been done before I found this site. *sadface*

  8. PG Scotty A

    You’re killin’ me.

    “Survey is on ITS way.”

You call yourselves writers! Tsk. tsk.

  9. PG Timothy Diokno

@Scotty A: Ouch! That’s bad! Maybe they’re on rush because of the survey results. But don’t die just yet.

@Cyan: I think more girls are on non-freelance work. I mean, someone’s gotta keep up with the guys back there. LOL!

  10. PG Louisa Nicholson

Great idea for a survey! I have a general question though, isn’t congregating and displaying prices for these industries considered price fixing? It may not be safe to display actual amounts per hour, rather, why not just show a range based on 50 dollar or pound intervals? Should be safe then!

  11. PG Aaron Cruikshank

I think the results on men vs. women are skewed in this survey because the female freelancers are all out there working while us guys are in here, messing around on the Internet.

  12. PG jb

    Sounds interesting!

  13. PG Araceli

Ooh, sounds interesting. I’m looking forward to it, even though I came in too late to fill out the survey.

    Oh, and I’m a girl. Although I’m not a freelancer…yet.

  14. PG Martin

Maybe it would be best if you continue doing this survey in the future, but you probably thought of that already… ;-) Keep up the good work!

  15. PG Paul M.

It will be great to find out which OS (you can pull that from stats as well…) and hardware people use.

  16. PG Casey L. Jones

I’m a girl… and a freelancer to boot! YAY girls!

  17. PG AlexPC

Sadly I discovered this blog today, missed the survey.. greetings from Argentina.

  18. PG Ryan Bickett

Great news. As others were, I was beginning to wonder what was happening. I’m patiently waiting in anticipation for the results! Sounds like it will be great information.

  19. PG anggi krisna

thanks for your announcement… :) coz i always check your site everyday..
i want to know the result of the survey.

  20. PG jonathan

Where is the report? I thought it was to be with us in our mail boxes within 2 weeks from this post?

  21. PG scott

any updates on when we will see results?

  22. PG jonathan

Seems to me – what with no reply to everyone asking where this report is that we all basically got screwed out of giving our information for freelanceswitch to easily earn money from acquiring this massive amount of valuable data.

I for one am very upset about this – companies pay lots of money for these kinds of reports.

What’s the deal guys, I mean really how hard is it to get this information into a report once it’s in a database? Once the info is there – comparing the results to get useful figures is really quite simple.

I STILL wait with countless other thousands of users for our FREE report that we willingly contributed to.

  23. PG Tyer Kelley

Hey Guys, are we ever going to see the results? It’s been a pretty absurdly long time. If I was this late on a deadline you can rest assured I’d be served with papers by now :)

  24. PG Ryan Bickett

I agree. At the very least a status update would be nice.

  25. PG jonathan

Seems like they either do not read their users comments or are simply dodging the question…….

  26. PG Ryan Bickett

    Hello… Hello… Anybody home?

  27. PG jonathan

Another month rolls by – and still no response on the forums but I did get this message after contacting freelance switch on December 17th 2007 –

Hey Jonathan, thanks for the heads up, yeah I’ve been noticing that as well. I’ll harass Cyan, maybe we should just publish what we have so far :-(

Maybe Cyan needs harassing a little more……….

  28. PG Peter Lewis

Boo, hiss – where’s the survey we were promised. Get your pitchforks and burning torches ready, we’ll invade their offices!
