Even with a ton of hard work, sometimes success doesn't happen. I think the important point is that a lot of times, even without knowing it, we defeat ourselves before we even start something. "Oh, I won't be good at that" or perhaps the "Oh, I don't have time to do that." For some people, this kind of mindset (sometimes unintentional) can keep them in unhealthy or even self-destructive careers/jobs or keep them away from pursuing what they'd really like to do.
