Simply Invoices Launch and Discount
Cyan Ta'eed
Brian from Simply Invoices contacted me a little while ago. The app was still in development, but Brian had taken the time to make a screencast just for FSw! The app itself looked great, and the personalized narration convinced me that this was our type of guy!
Brian has since gotten Ryan Bates of Railscasts.com to create a new screencast (although we loved the personality of the old one) that you can see here.
Simply Invoices allows you to create invoices from the time you’ve logged into your Basecamp project. It is pretty intuitive, and will save you a lot of time if you currently use Basecamp for time tracking and another program for invoicing. It will just make life a little easier, which is what we all like!
Brian will be adding support for other applications soon, so if you would like Simply Invoices for the time tracking app you use, email him and he’ll prioritize appropriately.
The basic package is free so can try it out, but if you want to get the super dooper ones Simply Invoices is offering FreelanceSwitch readers a $5 discount for their first month (meaning you’re paying as little as US$1 for your first month.)
The coupon code is FSWPROMO if you want to take advantage of the offer! It expires on the 23rd of November, so do it this year to take advantage

Carmen: Sorry about that. Internationalization is on my todo list. I wanted to focus on what I knew for this 1.0. Hope you understand.
I can’t make any promises about when it will be done, but if you’d like to help test the international features and get early access please email me brian@simplyinvoices.com

but what if you’re not a basecamp user? Basecamp is a little to pricey for my tastes

Brad Knapp: As Cyan mentioned, I plan to add support for other ways to import time. If you’re currently tracking time in another application (web or desktop) please let me know what you’re using (brian@simplyinvoices.com). If you just want to enter the data by hand, I’d also like to know that.

I like (and use) Freshbooks for invoicing. Has integrated Time Tracking that you can easily turn into invoicing (even on the free account). Also has lots of other great stuff like allowing you to accept payment right from the invoices, send invoices by snail mail, and even an API.

I looked at this site and I think its really interesting but lacks some of the most useful features from other similar applications that either have built in time tracking or also talks to basecamp. Take a look at http://www.blinksale.com, http://www.freshbooks.com ( a little less freelance-y), and http://www.getcashboard.com. They all offer varying plans (including free plans) and are pretty easy to use.
There are a lot of options out there. Just want to make sure everyone knows them so they can make the best decision for their workflows. Cyan: I’d be interested in writing an article about it since I’ve used so many good articles from your site.

I agree with Kyle. There are a lot of options out there and it’s always a good idea to sleep…I mean shop around.
(…that was an attempt at a joke…probably a really bad joke, but I couldn’t help myself)

I agree with the cashboard recommendation. I really like that program.

Neat app, but I hope the credit card number in the screencast wasn’t valid.

Does anyone know of such an app with i18n support?
If not, I’ve been thinking of doing one myself, if I can find the time and the team.

Hi Chris,
I’m readying an update for the end of this week. After that, I plan to add the following regarding international users:
I’m going to allow the user to choose a currency as well as some optional tax fields.
I’ll also allow the user to choose a language for the strings in the generated invoice. So things like “Payment Due” and “From” will be localized for the receiving client.
Chris, if that interests you and you’d like to help test these features when they’re available, shoot me an email: brian@simplyinvoices.com
