FSw - The Best of June, Three Months On, a Passive Income Subsite and News
Collis Ta'eedToday marks FreelanceSwitch’s three month anniversary and while the site is still a baby, it’s a bit of a milestone. In this quarter just past the site has put up 130 posts, received more than 3,000 comments, 9,000 subscribers, 750,000 visitors and most importantly it’s become the best freelancing site on the web (in my biased opinion). So congratulations to Cyan and all the writers, the commenters and the readers, you guys have been kicking butt and takin’ names!
FSw News
Yesterday I put together mockups of a new FreelanceSwitch design. This is always a scary process as people seem to quite like this current one, but over the last three months I’ve been seeing it’s various flaws and limitations. So since we are going to be introducing a new character set to replace the current stock ones, it feels like time for a new design - actually in my head it’s always time for a new design
No word yet on how long it’s going to take me, but the mockups look pretty neat!
In other news, as Cyan wrote up the other day we’re launching the freelancer survey this upcoming week. I’ve been really excited about the survey right since we launched the site, and at last we think we have enough readers that we can pull it off successfully. A lot will hinge on as many people as possible taking the survey, because the more that do, the more interesting and accurate the information becomes. It really will be a case of our collective knowledge being more than the sum of its parts.
Also this week we’ll be putting up a whole subsite dedicated to passive income for freelancers. Passive income is earning that happens even when you aren’t working on it. Some examples of passive income that we’ll be discussing include selling flash or illustrations as stock, providing a subscription service such as hosting, taking donations for a software download, and so on.
Plus I’m building the subsite with the Light CMS so you can expect a review of the product shortly thereafter, which I think will be really useful for those designers out there.
The Best of June
June was a month when our writing team really hit their pace and the site was choc-a-block with great advice and opinion. Some of the highlights included Leo’s post on making laziness work for you, Darius from ColourLovers giving us advice on how NOT to apple for a freelance job, Kristen imploring everyone to get the most out of their weekends (I’m writing this post at 8:40am on Saturday morning, so maybe I should have read this last one more thoroughly!) and finally me chiming in on how to use Paypal, Escrow and the like for taking payment.
To see the complete list of all the posts that went up in June, or any time for that matter you can head on over to our archives page.
Thanks once more to our sponsors
And on a final note, a big thank you to our sponsors Rackspace Hosting, ElementFusion’s Light Content Management System, Jobs and Gigs, ColourLovers and FlashDen.
These guys make this site possible and we both appreciate their support and encourage you all to make free with their services to thank them!

If your site has only been up for three months you should write a blog about how you got so many subscribers so fast. Maybe it’s just cause your site is so damn good!

Hey guys and gals! Congrats on reaching the 3-month mark - although I thought you’d been going way longer than that! My own 3-month blogiversarry is coming up in a couple of weeks, but I don’t have 9000 feed subscribers!
Keep it going - and well done!

Um… Should be “guys and gal” right? It’s those blasted characters - they all look like they’re wearing dresses!

Your opinion might be biased, but Freelance Switch is the best freelance blog on the web for sure. Hope you’ll be able to keep the articles’ quality going.

Only 3 months? And here I thought I had been missing out on all this goodness. I feel better now:-)
But seriously, keep it coming, love the quality articles and tongue-in-cheek humour!

Congrats on coming this far so quickly. I too want to echo the hope that you don’t run out of steam. Take your time if you want to, I’d prefer quality over quantity.
By the way, as a web designer I would be interested in an article explaining what aspects of the current FSw web site led you to decide to do a redesign. And maybe how you think the new design solves those issues. Thanks.
