Essentials for Freelance Writers
Kristen Fischer
Because I enjoy scouring the net for great resources, I’d like to share some with the freelance writers here. So I’ve rounded up some useful articles on the craft of freelance writing.
Angela Booth nails down the essentials of productivity in her article “Five Ways to Become a More Productive Writer.” In the article, she cites goal setting as a way to enhance productivity, along with tossing out worries over criticism.
Podcasting…for Writers? You bet. It’s essential to stay on top of your game—especially with marketing and corporate communications writing. Diana Huff tells all in this enlightening article about what she has learned about podcasting.
Bob Bly always has useful information on his website, www.bly.com. In this article, Why Clients Rewrite Your Copy—And How To Handle It, he explores a common issue with writers. I can’t get enough of things that tell me how to cope with the unique challenges of my job…having people re-write my work is one of them!
As freelance writers, we’re usually being told by editors what to do—and not to do. So let’s sock it to them, now, shall we? Media Bistro’s article Voice From the Other Side: Tips for Editors has great information for freelance editors, and gives freelance writers some guidelines on what to demand from your editors.
Want to spice up your query letters? AbsoluteWrite published this article by Marlene Caroselli, “From the Usual to the Unconventional: Query Letters that Get Results.”
With tons of resources on the web, you can count on me to bring you more in the coming weeks. Happy writing!

Hi Kristen:
Good compilation of articles on writing tips.
Angela booth has got very good post with useful tips.
I have few more suggestions:
1. Read resourceful books - Some time you get stuck. You feel void in your mind. Reading books of other writers gives you some brilliant ideas to further enhance.
2. Get out of your room - Most of us spend hours of our day in room and in front of laptop. This limits your thought process. Just get out of the room and walk for a while. Believe me you will come back with at least one idea for writing.
3. Listen to interviews in TV or radio - You will learn more on way of life and life time experiences from different people. You get inspirations.
4. Yes, Morning time is good to write but plan the writing before you sleep.

The Angela Booth list was very useful, specially that whole “learn to write by writing”, because it’s something I’ve never done and maybe it’s why I’m one of those frustrated wirters.
Great page by the way!
Another thing, in the JobBoard, the jobs that say “anywhere”, are really anywhere? or is it “anywhere in the US”?
See ya next time!
