The Best Freelance Writing Books

We’ve talked about graphic design books in the past, but there are some great freelance writing books out there as well. If you are interested in writing on a freelance basis at all, these books can bring you up to speed on the information you need to know.

How To Start A Freelance Writing Business

Just starting out as a freelance writer? Not really sure how to handle marketing yourself, setting your rates and other tasks you need to complete in order to be an effective freelancer? Laura Spencer has put together a definitive guide for FreelanceFolder. Spencer draws on over 19 years of experience as a writer — seven of that as a freelancer — to give you all the information you need in How To Start A Freelance Writing Business.

The Renegade Writer

Linda Formichelli’s and Diana Burrell’s freelance writing book tosses all that ‘conventional wisdom’ that unsuccessful freelancers seem to parrot out the window and focus on how what actually works. In The Renegade Writer, they go through how to create a steady stream of ideas, improve on your interview skills and (most importantly) how to make sure you get enough money from your clients. Even experienced writers can find some new tips in this book.

The Wealthy Freelancer

The Wealthy Freelancer takes freelancing up a notch. The goal of the book, along with its authors, Ed Gandia, Pete Savage and Steve Slaunwhite, is to help freelancers make bigger incomes. While it’s officially for all freelancers, the book draws on the experiences of the authors, all of whom are writers.

The Urban Muse Guide to Online Writing Markets

Writing online can be a very different matter than freelancing for print publications. From style issues to what online markets actually pay a living wage, Susan Johnston’s The Urban Muse Guide to Online Writing Markets can make a difference in your ability to land freelance writing gigs. Johnston is also the writer behind the Urban Muse, where she has extensively blogged about the freelancing life.
