Web Design vs. Niche Web Design – Video

For many freelance web designers, there comes a point in your career when you decide to renew your focus, tighten up your business, and find new ways to scale up and grow. One way to do that is to focus on a niche market. For more on that, see my previous article, Skyrocket Your Freelance Business by Going Niche.
In this video, I look at the differences and advantages between a general web design business compared to a niche web design business.
In a general web design business, every client has different goals, every project has different requirements, and you as the web designer craft a different solution for each. In a niche web design business, we target a specific market who tends to have a similar set of goals and requirements. This way, you can design a similar solution that can be easily replicated to more clients.
What do you think? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

This made me think deeep about my current business model in web design which I honestly believe is not gaining any momentum due to competition and factors such as this one.
Good to hear it! While I do think solo web design business can be hard to scale up… I don’t believe competition should be a constraint. So many organizations in the world need web design!
Nice presentation but very basic information. I feel there is lot more to say and learn and you just touched the surface.
Yes, it’s intended to be short and open-ended. Hope it gets some ideas flowing.
I’ve been moving toward niches as well, but in multiple markets. I don’t think I would want to work with the same type of client — producing the same thing over and over again. With that said, this is a great idea and I can see nothing more to say on the topic. I’m a fan of freelance Jam so keep up the good work.
I think web designers should begin to find their niches now and start calling themselves by them. It would turn them into experts and bring them more money rather than casting a broader net.
Thanks for tuning into FreelanceJam Neil!
Yes, that is a pitfall of focusing on one niche. It can get repetitive. I personally enjoy the process of growing/systemizing the business though, so that keeps me engaged.
I seen your presentation. it mainly relevant to target a specific market new ways to scale up and grow.
You have a point, I’ve stumbled upon many successful web design businesses doing this.
I focus only on WordPress powered sites so I don’t know if that somewhat counts. Then again, that may not be niche enough. I would need to be more specific.
The way I see it know, freelancers tend to use the “jack of all trades” method, while a fully functioning incorporated business will lean towards the niche method.
Yes I agree. Just focusing on WordPress wouldn’t be a niche (imo). You can do so many different things with it.
You have good point of view here.. I like the video presentation you provided here, between a Niche WEb Design vs Web Design..
Hello,
Interesting your tips.
I decided to focus my work on the branch of aesthetics and beauty.
I also have felt the difficulty in climbing my business.
Targeting a specific niche makes perfect sense. I did this some years ago and built a CMS for real estate agencies and made an absolute killing.
Hi John. Could I interview you about your real estate CMS like I did with Brian Case here: http://www.freelanceunleashed.com/001-finding-a-niche-for-your-freelance-business/
Sure thing dude, I’d be happy to. Just click on my name and hit the contact page. Thanks for asking!
I hadn’t really thought of niche web design but that would involve working on similar projects all the time which could get boring. The only perk is you learn to understand clients better.
