I just moved into a house with my aunt and uncle who have a 2 year old and a 8 year old. In conclusion, headphones are my new best friend. =]

    This is so true!
I work only two days at the office and the rest I do from home
    and yet…
When I’m out of my colleagues talking range my productivity is amazingly high!!!
headphones is a nice solution only if you don’t mind to be perceived as an anti-social…

    Very funny cartoon.

  11. PG Danny Outlaw

ha…is it bad that I have to wear headphones at home?

  12. PG Ryan Allen

In the venerable book Peopleware, there’s discussion about some studies conducted that investigate the effect listening to music while you work has on your productivity.

Two separate groups were given the same task to work on. One group had complete silence to work in , the other had background music playing.

The group with background music were found to miss out on underlying patterns in their solution. The theory is, that when listening to music the right hemisphere of your brain is engaged, and you miss out on the ‘aha!’ moments that your sub-conscious often provides.

So while headphones and music is ideal for blocking out background noise of the workplace, it’s overall not ideal for thought work.

    :)

This just happen to me today, and I was like wait a minute I remember this situation from somewhere… Ah bingo, yesterday when I check out this comic! I usually have one ear open incase someone need to get my attention (as it always happens being a web dev for a newspaper), but this time I took your advice and put both in. :P

Honestly, I’ll use my headphones at work without music. It is more subtle than a do-not-disturb sign and just putting on the ‘phones gets me mentally into work-mode.
