Freelance Freedom #177: Managing Production

PG

N.C. Winters is always drawing. When he isn't making comics, doodling or working as a freelance graphic artist, he spends his time painting pretty pictures for galleries from his home studio in sunny southern California.

Not trying to offend anyone, the traffic manager might be bad, but the designer might be worse in this cartoon.

EXACTLY the reason why we’ve gotten out of print altogether! As competitive as one needs to be to win biz card or stationary design (and even logo design) jobs – the small mark up we used to put on the printing NEVER paid for all the hassles and back and forth as we attempted to manage and deliver printed goods.

We dealt with some pretty good and easy to work with printers, but when you throw clients into the mix, things get messed up rather quickly. We now send clients looking for printing directly to the printer. One of the best decisions we have yet to make. Cheers,

I have an implicit rule that states that any contact with the printer regarding my work is done directly between me and them. No middle man, please.

Oh the print world… glad I don’t have to do that anymore haha.

Ha! This is another one of those communication nightmares I’d like to avoid. I think designers should specify things before accepting jobs like these ( to avoid hassles ).

Sounds like an Account Exec I once worked with who called litho possies ‘see through things with black stuff on them’.
