N.C. Winters is always drawing. When he isn't making comics, doodling or working as a freelance graphic artist, he spends his time painting pretty pictures for galleries from his home studio in sunny southern California.
this happens all too often – don’t know how many customers i have had to walk through their projects with them and define their scope for them! awesome comic as usual!
How often we are in this situation..wonder how the freelancers respond to such a tricky situation….NC really touches the issues of day today life of freelancer for sure
At its most basic level, a metaphor describes the use of a body of knowledge about one concept to understand or comment on a second concept. Metaphors are especially powerful when used to help understand a concept that is unfamiliar or unapproachable.
Anyone knows of a good comic or graphic way to explain this to clients? I have this question asked way too many times… Would be nice to be able to point them to some easy way to understand (I often use the car example actually)
I tell my clients that building a web site is like building a house, we can build a 10 bedroom mansion or we can build a 1 bedroom shack. We can have hardwood floors or we can have fake wood. It all depends on what they want and what their budget can handle.
You be sly, like the cat on your lap.

And the other one is “How much is it for a website?”.
My reply is “How much for a car?”
Person: “what kind of car?”
My reply: “Exactly…”
Ooh, I LIKE that one, Darren. May have to save that one and use it myself on a client or two. Thanks!
May I use that too
?
@ Darren McPherson I like it! “How much is it for a website?” “How much for a car?” – great point!
Nice rabbit slippers
I ask that question about way too many situations. Life would be simpler if someone would just pay me to be a smartass.

I use a very similar example – for EVERYTHING for a site:
Plot of land = Hosting
Address = Domain
House = Site (built in different configurations)
Decorations = Content
TV/Radio = External content (feeds etc)
Works really well
The rabbit slippers! The coffee! The cat! Oh it’s toooooo true!
The only thing that I don’t like about Freelance Freedom … is there isn’t a new one every single day.
That’s the time that you should quote per hour.. Let them be scared!!! har har
