N.C. Winters is always drawing. When he isn't making comics, doodling or working as a freelance graphic artist, he spends his time painting pretty pictures for galleries from his home studio in sunny southern California.
Though every person I’ve ever told I work freelance said I’m the luckiest person in the world. Hah, if they knew how hard it was to get into and try and make a name for yourself.
While I am so glad that I am my own boss, at the same time, I want to puke when my friends tell me how lucky I am. Sure there is a little luck, but mostly it’s hard work. In my field the business can get seasonal and work can be very slow in certain months where I just sit at home and doubting if I have made the right career choice, where some months I can work 12-16 hours every day. I do feel blessed to be supported by my family in my decision, but I am so tired of my friends (all my friends are 9-5ers) tell me how cool it is to get to sleep in in the morning. They don’t know that I can work till 1am and 7 days a week! (a little rant here…)
Well actually it sometimes takes me a whole hour to get from the kitchen to the office.
Although I’ve discovered that, for some reason, having the TV turned off seems to really cut down on the morning snarl-ups. Wander if this would work on the London Underground?
Haha, I got a good chuckle out of that one. One thing I do miss however is working around other people. I’m a very social person and love being around others. That’s the one thing I miss about not being freelance.
Spot on, N.C.! I started freelancing after my son was born, and the way I’m planning things, I won’t ever return to a regular job.
Even though I’m not a very social person at all, I do sometimes miss having people around, though. On the upside, I never let work get in the way of having lunch with my friends
Well, those are just the sacrifices you make

So true! I am fully willing to “sacrifice” the benefits of a corporate job for being my own boss. Well put N.C. Winters.
Very funny! Got a good laugh from this! Keep ‘em coming!
Good ‘toon! BTW, I have yet to catch my computer playing office politics with the furniture.
I just love this cartoon (from one San Diegan to another)!
Ah, the good “Take me with you” joke.
very funny… look forward to see another freelance freedom
Cheers,
Cindy
