Freelance Freedom #147

PG

N.C. Winters is always drawing. When he isn't making comics, doodling or working as a freelance graphic artist, he spends his time painting pretty pictures for galleries from his home studio in sunny southern California.

    ha ha..and right on spot..
love you guys for putting it up..

  2. PG Engelbert

    Shit! That’s so f***ng true…

  3. PG Ignacio Segura

That reminds me of something a friend of mine said:

“NOT being nice is actually a virtue.”

  4. PG Kakujo

Ugh… I can’t convey how many times a “friend” or very distant family member has tried to pull this.

I played along the first few times, but it’s true what they say: Do free work you don’t enjoy one too many times, and you’ll begin to resent your work.

Do yourself a favor and don’t fall into that rut: Just explain your position and say “NO”. If they don’t understand or become angry, Pfft. They’ll get over it.

  5. PG keukens

    Hehe, true

  6. PG Neal Chester

Ahh, the lack of respect and understanding for the designer/artist – it never fails.

    This is a good comic.

  7. PG Fabián Fucci

I enjoy every one of your strips, and although I barely comment – damn, you have been right on the spot this time!

  8. PG Marlene Oliveira

I’ve heard the ‘it shouldn’t take you long’ comment a few times too many. If it’s so simple a task, why don’t you do it yourself? Oh, wait – you’re *acknowledging* that I have expertise, you just don’t value it!

  9. PG Dan Marek

    So. Much. Truth.

  10. LOL I’d say that friendship worth less then time “friend” spent for that message. It happens. :)

  11. PG Miguel Braga

Sometimes is really hard to charge a friend.
But why wouldn’t charge for your work?

Every time you deliver a job you are helping someone who couldn’t do it on his own. If you charge a friend you are still helping just because you are available to do it. Give him (or her) a price reduction if it makes you feel happy.

Everyone has to make a living…

  12. PG Lisa Kanarek

That’s perfect! I’ve been there. It’s amazing how many friends come out of the woodwork when they need your help! Keep up the good work.

  13. PG Ortzinator

To be frank, expecting services for free when they know it’s your business is extremely rude and if they don’t recognize that then they’re probably not much of a friend. I think even asking for a discount is a bit presumptuous, even if you’d offer them one.

    1. PG DennisBB

You are making a very good point actually

  14. PG JCofield

Hahahah Now that is on point!

  15. PG DennisBB

    HA HA LOL

  16. PG valokuvaaja

Friends are the worst. Family too but you have to tolerate them anyway…

  17. PG 21st Century Global

ahh – the freedom! haha very good

  18. PG Andy Griffiths

Ha Ha we have all been in that awkward situation before i imagine! I am all up for helping friends out, as any who are worth the bother would do the same for you. However once doing work pro bono for friends and family starts to get in the way of paying projects, this can really rock the boat.

  19. PG Roy Daniel DSilva

Wait! It’s Sexist! Does the author mean that a girl cannot doodle! Burn Him Down! :)

  20. PG brian fidler

just got that call last week :)

  21. PG monkey

Just adding: it doesn’t only happen to designers (translator/VO here)!
