Freelance Freedom #144

N.C. Winters is always drawing. When he isn't making comics, doodling or working as a freelance graphic artist, he spends his time painting pretty pictures for galleries from his home studio in sunny southern California.

This is awesome and on point. Circumstances like these lead me to be more of a teacher. People need to understand that their family’s designs aren’t professional. Sometimes we’re scared to even tell them – for fear of losing them. But I believe the truth is the best.

I wish more people shared this sentiment. It’s troubling that so many designers now go along with the craziest client demands out of fear of losing the client. I’m more inclined to believe that a client will respect you and your work more if you really challenge them to analyze their decisions and make judgements that are in the best interests of their business, putting personal feelings aside. As tough as it can be to try explaining to a client why your design direction is solid and their daughter’s isn’t, in the end you are more likely to lost the client if you follow them down a road of bad choices.

If you challenge the client on their tendency to go with personal feelings, you could possibly offend them and lose them. But if you follow them down a road of bad design decisions and deliver a sub-par final product, you will almost definitely lose them.

Luckily I haven’t had this happen yet, but the comic is still funny.

lol, hillarious. I recently wrote a post on clients and how they can be annoying. The guy in the cartoon (literally) illustrates how irritating some clients can be! lol, nice one!

It’s frightening that this scenario plays out so often. Last time for me was about a month ago. Client tells me that she was on board with the design approach, until her daughter looked at the designs and didn’t like them. Back to square one…

    1. PG Q

Had that happen to me too but It was the clients wife not Daughter.

    2. PG Pier2Design

Same here. About a month ago I was on the phone with a client reviewing some logo revisions and I could hear his mom loudly stating opinions in the background.

How does it go? Committees kill creativity.

  13. PG Originalspirit

    haha, Love it!

  14. PG Klepto
