The Monster List of Freelancing Job Sites

Update 2: In 2009 we updated this post. With the web changing every day, the best list of job sites changes all the time. Go and read The Monster List of Freelancing Job Sites 2009 Update.

Update: Have added 48 extra resources + New Non-English section, keep those suggestions coming! This post has been translated into Spanish by Alfonso at cultura, comunicación y diseño. Thanks Alfonso!

When it comes to freelancing, one of the biggest challenges can be finding work. Even the most successful of freelancers will experience a lean month here and there, so it pays to have as many sources of potential work as possible. That’s why we’ve compiled a monster list of job sites from around the net. There is sure to be a site in here that is listing a job tailor made for you!

Before we get to the list though I would like to mention that as FreelanceSwitch is fast becoming the destination of choice for freelancers we will be adding our own job board for listing freelance gigs. It’s arriving in a fortnight and for the first three months job listings will be totally free of charge to help get the board running.

As with all our lists if we’ve missed a crucial resource, please do send it in, or add it to the comments. We go through these lists every week or so and add in new resources to keep them up to date. Also you will find that we have tagged each site by the types of freelancers who will find it useful as well as the locations it may be applicable for. And now without further ado, here they are:

I work freelance from oDesk and I found good project there. It is my first one, but it was in the area I searched for and I think this is the best site I tried for now, as a business model.
It doesn’t require any payments from providers and it charges only 10% of the bid accepted from the buyer, but only after the end of the project

  33. PG F.D. Athow

How about Gumtree? Although it does not cater for US as far as I remember. But pretty much the rest of the world (including South Africa, Australia, Europe) can use it as a freelance platform. Gumtree is owned by Ebay….

  65. PG James

Don’t forget about FreelanceQ. This site delivers jobs right to you sort of like GMail would deliver email. Check it out: Freelance Jobs

  66. PG AllDataJobs.com

    Hey,

You forgot to include AllDataJobs.com. The #1 site for Data Professionals. Jobs include:

Data Architecture, Data Modeling, Data Analysis, Data Integration, Business Intelligence, DBA, Database Administration, ETL, Metadata, Data Mining, Master Data Management jobs

  67. PG Mark Davis

Mac freelancers should check out this website:

    http://www.macfreelancer.com/

  68. PG Stephen G

Don’t forget OnForce.com, which is kind of like an “indie Geek Squad”. Anyone can become an independent “OnForce Provider” which makes them eligible to accept work orders that are posted by OnForce’s “Service Buyers”. OnForce is the middleman and takes a cut of each work order.

The most common types of assignments available are cabling jobs, break/fix repair and new computer set-up at residences and small businesses. However occassionally other work comes by … Cisco switch configuration assistance, web site maintenance, wireless network site survey, etc

It is a great way to get some income in-between gigs.

  69. PG Dan Masq

Hey I really like reading your posts, but you don’t have a technorati button… I was hoping you could join technorati so I (and others, I’m sure) could stay tuned! Thanks!

In the Pacific Northwest we have Freelance-Seattle.Net. It’s a community where freelancers network (on the fs-Discuss mailing list) and get work (on the fs-Projects list).

    http://freelance-seattle.net

  73. PG Geof A

Another couple worth adding and in a currently unrepresented field are ProZ (http://www.proz.com) and Translators Cafe (http://www.translatorscafe.com) for freelance translators. Both are comprehensive sites, not just job listings, but the job listings are a huge draw.

  74. PG Ana

Hello again. I don’t know if I can ask here this.
I want to know if someone here as any work experience in sites like http://gofreelance.com
    Is it really wort it?

  80. PG Sean

Awesome list! I’ll definitely be checking them all out….well, almost all of them lol.

  81. PG Duncan Taylor

    Hi Cyan,

I’m the founder and MD of a UK website for freelancers called people4business.com – and have also just launched a sister site called people4charity.com which specialises in providing freelancers for the not-for-profit sector.

I used to sell my services as an IT contractor and set up people4business because I thought there must be an easier way!

Basically, Buyers and Sellers of services register on the site for free. The Seller specifies the rate they want to receive – we uplift this by a flat margin of 10% and make their details available on our search engine at this price. Contracts take place through the site and we invoice the Buyer at the price they have seen and pay the Seller the price they have asked for. For our margin we provide the platform, marketing, customer service, contracts, timesheets, invoicing, credit control – and we guarantee to pay the Seller of services irrespective of whether or when we are paid by the Buyer.

We have been running for a year now and have 6,000 Sellers (freelancers) and 750 Buyers (businesses).

If you need any more info. I’d be very happy to supply it.

    Kind regards

    Duncan

  82. PG Geof A

So, um, is the list going to be updated any time soon? I notice the translation resources still aren’t up there. Granted, I appear to be the only freelance translator here, but still.

  83. PG Collis

Yikes, sorry Geof – that would be my fault! I’ll get it updated first thing on Monday!

Actually I think there are a couple of freelance translators, someone else wrote to me about the same topic.

What languages do you translate between?

  84. PG Andrei Potorac

I used only rentacoder.com so far and that kept me QUITE busy. I don’t need to search for more work. Not yet at least! :)

Search my name on rentacoder and you’ll see how many projects I handle. Waaaay to many to search for more, but I checked out some of the websites from the list. Amazing, so many jobs out there. :D

    Good job!

  85. PG Nandor

Can’t believe, this is still pulling visitors.
To any one with a job site or related topics!
Do not leave this one out!
    Thumbs Up!
    myskillregister.com.au

  86. PG Cyan

    Hi guys,

We’ve now reviewed and added the sites that have been suggested in the comments. Thanks for letting us know about them! Sorry about the wait – there were quite a few of them :D

  87. PG Gromit

Ssshhh…stop telling everyone where the contracts are ;)

Seriously though, thanks for the list. I knew about most of them, but there’s a couple there that I didn’t know about so hopefully something good will come of that. Cheers!

  88. PG Ryan

Okay, for a minute there I thought they left off eLance. This has got to be the most conclusive list I’ve ever seen though (aside from a straight up Google search). It’ll take me a while to wade through it and find the best ones. Can we get a tagging/voting system up in here so as to quickly rank all the links by quality?

  89. PG Dev

Hey all – This is a response to Ana’s question from April 07. Personally, I use gofreelance for getting most of my jobs and have always received good rates. One of the benefits of paying $2.95 to join is that you establish a quality marketplace of clients and freelance service providers. I can’t say enough good things about it, so check it out – http://tinyurl.com/35r9vv

  90. PG Bjoern Fredriksen

Another one to add to the list of online marketplace is also https://www.it-globalized.com

  91. PG Naomi

One of the questions that I’ve always thought about (and struggled myself as well) has been that how do buyers differentiate between all the different providers. The same question I came across on ResourcePad exchange here: http://www.resourcepad.com/blog/2007/07/12/what-are-the-qualities-of-a-good-service-provider-part-1/#comment-15

I hope some of you guys can answer it.

  92. PG celiece aurea

wow. nice work. looks like we all appreciate your time and effort :)

    celieceaurea.com

  93. PG Tanmay Agarwal

I am freelancer from India.I have got many freelancing jobs from http://www.freelanceindia.com.This site is most popular in India.Your list is quite useful.I suggest you include http://www.freelanceindia.com also.It will prove to be a very useful. Thanks ,keep it up.

  94. PG Pablo Matamoros

    Hy Cyan,

I worked as freelancer years ago, when there weren’t as many resources as now. Then things got nasty in my home country (there was a big economic crisis in Argentina), I lost the contracts that I had on side of my day work. Finally I left my country. I’ve lived in New Zealand for the last 4 years.

After a couple of busy years as immigrant, I have a more stable situation. So, I decided to get some extra cash like I used to do in the old times. And, what a surprise!!! I found so many resources online! I still can’t believe it (can I?). It is hard to start though.

Thanks for your list. I love freelanceswitch. It is an excellent site!

Since I have experience in the South American and Kiwi (New Zealand) market, I have a few sites to add to your list:

    Traditional job listings:

    South American sites (Spanish) sites:
    - http://www.bumeran.com: jobs from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela. Includes also an international section.
    - http://www.laborum.com: jobs from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and other South American countries.

    New Zealand sites:

  206. PG Sophia

that’s really a hugeeeeeeeeeeee list of freelancers.
BUT BUT BUT………my personal view is very different.
i wanted to hire virtual employees for web designing and SEO. Actually i am looking for whole virtual team. Because now it’s become very expensive for our organization to recruit employees :( And we need reliable and quality virtual employees.
We were prepared to post our requisite on freelancers’ site. But we have observed that it’s very time as well as money consuming process. And also I heard that “The bigger problem on Elance, in my experience, is dummy projects. Some buyers post projects simply to get an idea of the cost or to try to find free work” So, what next?
Our team comes out with conclusion to directly contact companies who are providing virtual employee services. But the question is “RELIABILITY and Hiring charges”.
We have got replies from some forums and communities. So, now we have one option company marketraise corp. it’s nice.
But we want best service provider with better package.

    Thanks in advance
    Sophia

    1. PG Peter

      >The bigger problem on Elance, in my experience, is dummy projects. Some buyers post projects simply to get an idea of the cost or to try to find free work” So, what next?

There are no so many, and it is not confined to Elance. Bidders should always look at the track record of the job poster before committing a lot of time to researching and preparing their bid.

Thanks for the list. Great job!

  207. PG Nate

Awesome post thanks, im looking at the UK ones now.

I’ll add here another place to get freelance job (there are initial tests and time-tracking/desktop-capturing software to download) – Odesk.com Have not used this extensively yet but it looks good.

I can’t wait what you will come out with next!!

    http://JobShuk.com

Israeli bidding site, but for English-speakers

  216. PG lancerglobal

    http://www.lancerglobal.com
LancerGlobal connects your business with professionals

If you require professional programming or website design for your business, whether its a long-term job or just a single project, you will find the help you need here at the prices you want to pay. No matter how big or small your budget is, freelancers from around the world will compete for your business at LancerGlobal.

Step 1: Post a project (FREE).

Step 2: Receive bids by interested freelancers.

    Step 3: Choose a bid.

That’s it! Your project is then closed, your are put in contact with the chosen freelancer who will begin working, you can leave a review, and pay them when you are ready to pay them. Our fee: only $4, which is deducted from your LancerGlobal account only after your project closes. We even give you 30 days time to pay that fee! Why? Because we are confident you will be satisfied with the service LancerGlobal provides.

It’s like getting an estimate from dozens of qualified professionals and then choosing the one you like most. You save time because you don’t need to shop around, and you save money because programmers are competing for your business! LancerGlobal is the number one choice for thousands of freelancers and businesses when it comes to programming and design projects.

Why is LancerGlobal better? Some other freelance project sites similiar to LancerGlobal may charge you (the buyer) no fee at all. This may sound like a better deal, but they charge the freelancer a much higher fee than LancerGlobal, 12%-15%, sometimes more! We only charge freelancers 4%. That means that, in the end, you will save more on LancerGlobal because the freelancers won’t be forced to charge you ridiculously high rates to cover those fees. Next time you are considering a LancerGlobal alternative, make sure to find out what fee they charge their freelancers.

  217. PG Abhishek Mishra

Wow… this is amazing ! So many options… lol I wonder how many of them are tight-bidding-war free :P

On your next update, can you please add this recent startup of United States Freelancers. The site started in ‘08 and was originally for United States Freelancers only. Now, the site offers freelance posting and bidding to all international buyers and bidders alike.

    - Thank you.

    Liam

  228. PG Steve

I have found another helpful upcoming Job Portal………………..http://www.jobsbridge.com/

  229. PG totaapuri

odesk, guru and elance are very good sites for freelance programmers like j2ee, .net, etc.
odesk guarantees payment for hourly projects.

  230. PG Sean Nieuwoudt

    fantastic list! thanks

  231. PG Sarah

A very extensive list. Must say GAF usually has projects that offer real low rates, Elance is much better. Others I am not so sure yet but most of these sites I have never seen before so I will take some time to go through them.

  232. PG shabbir

    thanks for the info

  233. PG Michal

Thank you for that list. Im just working on one job site so its very inspirational!

  234. PG Moveis Mobiliario

Thank you for the spent time. Very useful information

  235. Great list, but I wonder why http://www.odesk.com is not included in the list?

  236. PG Gary Schultheis

I think that VOIS.com should be on this list. Not just some shameless plug!

  237. PG Koistya `Navin

    2. WebProJobs.com is down – it’s domain has expired.

  238. PG MorayWeb

All we need now is a big green ‘join/submit to all’ button and we are away!! :)

This is going to take a while to get through them all to see areas/regions covered but its a fantastic resource – will be on my digg and delicious in a few mins…

    cheers,

    Gordon

And don’t forget about the job and project boards on Blellow!

    Jobs: http://www.blellow.com/jobs
    Projects: http://www.blellow.com/projects

  241. PG Jin

From my experience http://www.rentacoder.com is the best site ever, they are very serious, there is a lot of jobs from easy 30$ to big 500 000$ projects, you can get a job very easily because there is few competition there about 7-8 bidder by project, and most of them don’t know what is harddrive, in one year i get about 3000 $ and i sent them via westernunion to any place in the world, you can also use this money to do other projects that you like without sending them, i use money to post projects on the same website to buy 3 domain names.and to create my own website. on the other way rentacoder is different from other websites because bidders messages are hidden, so othere bidders can’t see your bid and give lower price then yours, also if a a buyer didn’t like your job, he can’t refuse to pay , because you do the work, but the quality of work is not a reason to refuse payement.

  242. PG Emily

Freelance Job List http://freelancejoblist.com is my one-stop site for freelance web work. It aggregates freelance jobs from other sites and organizes them into categories.

  243. PG Ailichigo

Wahhh! This is incredible. Thank you so much!

  244. PG Jacob

Great list! Thanks for posting it!

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but it appears the link to the FSw job boards is broken. It takes you to “freelanceswitch.com/jobs” instead of “jobs.freelanceswitch.com”

  245. PG Yolanda Morris

This is a great list…just one issue…the link to your very website is broken. It should be fixed to: jobs.freelanceswitch.com instead of freelanceswitch.com/jobs. The latter is bringing up a 404 error page.

  246. PG BhuwanOnline

    This is a nice list ….. thanx…

All this while i have been targeting my clients thru html mailers……. but you get some really good clients thru emailers……

  247. PG jitendra

Pleased to check up Jobsbridge. It seems to be a unique one.

    Thanks buddy,

    Victor

  250. PG Xceedbd

Wow great list !! Really i like it. but most of the time i use Digitalpoint .

  251. PG Alexander Klar

Thank you for this very comprehensive list of sites. No. 33 is a dead link, though.

  252. PG Henry Rothschild

Another site to keep an eye on is Voolkan (at http://www.voolkan.com of course). It’s pretty new, I think, but seems simple, and has an interesting “job matching” feature once you apply to a few jobs through the site. And it’s free, so why not!

  253. PG Venkat

Wow, thats huge list. I always used to visit only oDesk, Elance and Guru. Now, I can take more jobs. Thanks

  254. PG Alexandre

The first link, for the FreelanceSwitch Job Board, is broken. I believe it’s the old URL.

  255. PG don

I currently use http://www.setuuubal.com for php jobs

  256. PG Gautam

You should not have included scriptlance as it is a third rate site and is out to cheat service providers. They deny payment withdrawals for no reason and take days to reply to messages. any one thinking of joining scriptlance.com as a Service Provider – BEWARE – you will soon be in trouble and lose your money.

  257. PG GetAFreelancer

Great work on the list, there is plenty of great sites out there although we offer a great deal more than programming, web design and seo. We have also made some big changes recently and are in the process of incorporating more.

    Regards.

  258. PG DXIdesign

This is an awesome list! You should get an award for helping out the tech community!!!!

    Thanks,

    TheDamonic.com

  259. PG PY Goh

WOW! What a nice list !

I just found a site with job matching ( Google Map). It do match and notify the job seeker and the employer, but looks like a new site : http://www.matchimedia.com

XPlace.com is a popular freelance site focusing on websites, programming, tech, graphic design, writing, and translation in the US and Israeli markets.

  265. PG Liran

This is Great listing thank you.
You should add http://www.donanza.com which is a freelance job search engine with deep filtering mechanism.

DoNanza has also a white labeling program which enables publishers to integrate the freelance projects search functionality in their web site under their brand,
    here is one example http://jobs.socialmedia.biz/

  266. PG sonnydesign

Im also wondering why odesk is not in the list. So far in my experience, getafreelancer, odesk and scriptlance are the best. The problem with elance they charge a lot not advisable for new freelancer.

  267. PG Carmen

Please consider including PlanetForHIre.com in your list of freelancing websites. It’s free to Employers and Job Seekers, extremely reasonable for freelancers and has a mission to help people globally get to work. The search engine was custom designed to filter out duplicate posts and get people globally connected faster and easier.

    PlanetForHire.com

  268. PG MyHome-MyOffice

The list is amazing. Keep up the good work. Thanks

  288. PG Josh

Great list. I’ve been using http://www.mymuto.com for the past months and love it.

  289. PG Celine

Wow! This is indeed a huge list. However, most of them rely on PayPal to withdraw funds. Can anyone please direct me to any sites from which I might withdraw my money from an e-Gold.com account? Is PayPal a reliable financial intermediation agency for online freelancers? I trust e-Gold.com much more than PayPal.

Perhaps, a comparative chart could be elaborated to explain the money affairs instead of a linear list.

    Thanks beforehand for your advice.

    1. PG PeterB

      Hi Celine,

Well Im a designer on designcrowd.com and Ive requested that they move to multiple payment options. They have told me that they have been hard at work implementing this of late so it looks like we will likely get this in the next couple of weeks. In terms of work on it, its loaded with jobs all the time.

      Rgrds,

      Pete

  290. PG Hasan Habib

This is a motivational site. I am too much inspired as a freelancer. I shall refer it to my community

  291. PG jeff

http://www.freelancejoblist.com is worth a look — lots of jobs aggregated from 100s of sites with a customized alert function

  292. PG Fred

The problem with these sites is the way they are devaluing the professions in the West. A fully qualified professional will find it difficult to compete with a guy working in his room, somewhere in India, and who only needs a few dollars to keep him going.
The real offenders are the buyers, they are mostly looking for the cheapest guy, rather than the quality of the work.
But, hey, if someone offers you a BMW for the price of a Lada, you will find it an attractive offer. However, if you saw a BMW advertised like this in your local paper, would you suspect there is something wrong with it? well a lot of people don’t that’s why they keep putting adverts for BMWs that are a write-off, there are people who are happy to buy them.

  293. PG Susanta K Beura

I am working with GetAFreelancer. But I was in search of some more freelance sites to get some more work. I got your site from a google search. But while clicking the link in google search page I never imagined for treasure of freelance sites.

    Nice piece of work.

    Thanks & Regards

    Susanta

  294. PG ARL

http://www.lancemonster.com. It’s a new freelance site, not a lot of job yet but very user friendly. It doesn’t cost anything to post a project. I posted one and had seveal bids the next day, chose a bidder and had my work done in less than 3 days. I recommend checking them out if you want good work for little money.
