Reply to Andy:
My opinion is that when you begin freelancing you must cooperate with a friend who can help you out.. for example i am a PHP freelancer and my friend is a Designer so we can offer a full set of services to our clients

so the selling in not a hard part anymore because you have a full range of services to offer and you have nothing to fear about

I think the problem for some freelancers is the very word "Marketing" which reminds them of selling, which is a scary thing.

Instead of thinking of marketing as selling, think of it as throwing bait in the water and waiting for the fish to find you. Set up an Adwords account and buy some keywords that are relevant to your services and your local area; post your services to niche directories that are heavily frequented (e.g., www.FreelanceLocalTech.com , FreelanceDesigners, Yahoo!), buy a yellow pages ad (if that's where clients will look to find the types of services you offer), billboards, whatever. Marketing doesn't have to look like spamming or cold-calling, it just has to do with making sure you and your services are visible to people who are looking in the place where they're looking with the message that will connect with them so that they call you.

Good post Kristen,

It's always hard to set aside time for marketing, especially if your up to your neck in assignments and scrambling to meet a deadline.

I'd like to add another - often overlooked - point: *always* be prepared to do marketing: the way you answer the phone is important as it could be someone calling for information for example. I even picked up a new client in the line at the supermarket once. I wouldn't have thought about the person as a prospect, if I hadn't been prepared to look for opportunities everywhere!
