As a freelancer, it’s practically guaranteed that you have great creative skills. In your chosen field, you can come up with inspired solutions to big problems and absolutely wow your clients. But actually landing those clients may be another story — few freelancers come from a sales background, which can make actually landing projects harder than it needs to be.
There are plenty of consultants and trainers who are willing to teach a person how to be a great salesman. If you’re not in a position to take those courses, though, there are some steps you can take to improve your ability to make a sale. Continue Reading

10 Essential Steps to Making the Perfect Pitch

To make it as a freelancer, you need to be able to sell your work. That’s why making a great pitch to a prospective client is one of the key skills you can develop to be more successful.
However, many freelancers screw up the pitch in a number of common ways, from talking too much about yourself and what you want, from not knowing what the client wants, to rambling on, to not saying who you are and why you’re perfect.
Don’t make these mistakes. Follow the steps below to make the perfect pitch.
1. Know the client. If you know the client well, you’re in a great position to make a great pitch. If not, you need to take the time to do a little research. Get to know their product, company, or publication. Google them, find out more via LinkedIn, contact others in your network who know the client. The more you know, the better your pitch.
2. Know their goals. Specifically, you want to know what the client hopes to achieve. Sure, they hope to sell a product or service. But how? What message are they trying to sell to the public? Who are they reaching out to? This is key. Talk to others, read their website, learn their message from promotions and marketing and advertising.

How to Get Repeat Business from Clients Through Feedback
Here’s a basic difference between products and services. The level of satisfaction of a product often has a direct correlation to sales: you offer a good product that’s well-liked, and most likely sales will go up; for bad products, sales dip.

That relationship is less transparent with services like the kind usually offered by freelancers. Freelance clients buying a service like web design or editing, will usually complete the sale unless you completely botch the deliverables.
In fact, there is a more nuanced spectrum of satisfaction when it comes to services than products, but the consequences are significant: clients that are dissatisfied with your freelance services will just opt for another provider. What’s at stake? A repeat project with the client and the opportunity to aim for bigger, better projects by improving your performance.
Unfortunately, gathering feedback can lead to some skewed results. If clients were a generally satisfied with your work, but not wowed, they may silently opt for another provider, and not bother giving you any feedback at all, even if you solicit them directly.
It’s frustrating: you probably only hear back from the joyously enthusiastic clientele and the ones with the biggest gripes. Small gripes usually get reported less.
Still, there are several benefits to spending the time getting a sense of what your clients think of you and your freelance services: Continue Reading

Should You Take a Company’s Test To Land a Gig?

A few years ago, I responded to an ad looking for writers from what I thought to be a reputable company. Within the hour I received a favorable response and an invitation to take their writing test. They assured me not many candidates receive this invitation, and that a successful outcome of the test would ensure paid work.
Initially, I was agreeable. I’d taken such tests in the past, and they never take more than a few hours. And sometimes, these writing tests are kind of fun – sort of a puzzle for us wordy types. But I soon became suspicious. This test was composed of an article to be edited and updated. Instructions specified where to get the information, appropriate sources, sections to include, word count, voice, etc.
Think twice before taking any test that will take more than a few hours, or that results in a fairly complete, usable product.
This would take more than a few hours, but more concerning, when I turned in my ‘test’, I would be handing over a completely updated, edited article, crafted to their specifics, entirely for free.
It’s rare, but not unheard of, that a company will use a skills test as a way to troll for free material. But it happens. Avoid a problem by remaining vigilant, particularly with a start up company or one that’s strictly online. Think twice before taking any test that will take more than a few hours, or that results in a fairly complete, usable product.
